The spectacular blaze north of Phuket lights the sky early today

Sunday, May 24, 2015
PHUKET: The crash of a petrol tanker into a power pole north of Phuket sparked a spectacular fire and downed a power pole, blacking out hundreds of surrounding homes along the holiday coast early today.

The driver was able to flee the cabin of the tanker before it was engulfed in flames in Phang Nga Town, not far from the Immigration centre.

He was alive but being treated for burns in Phang Nga Hospital.

Two people is a saloon car, startled by the smash, drove off the road down an embankment in Phang Nga Town but escaped with minor injuries.

The crash and blaze at 6.30am brought scores of people from their homes. It took firefighters 90 minutes to douse the blaze.

Police plan to question the tanker driver in detail about the dangers of the incident.

Power in homes in Phang Nga Town, Thai Muang and Thap Put was being gradually restored today.

It amazes me that you guys always have news from outside Phuket, and yet, you seem to have missed that massive accident yesterday morning around 9 am, on the road to the airport.( road 4026 ) 2 minivans involved, and by the looks of it, speeding had everything to do with it, as 1 minivan was on it's side on one side of the road, and the other one was on the total opposite side of the road, on it's side as well. Any updates on this? As i could not pass the place anymore, when i came back from the airport.

The vans were empty and nobody was hurt. A reader sent some great photos but the effects of the ''massive accident'' weren't worth reporting. Of course, if you actually paid for the news you complain about, Carl, we might be able to report even minor events.

For years tourist minivans have driven like total maniacs on Phuket, you consider it not news worthy Ed when they by pure luck did not have tourists on board or involve innocent bystanders, I think its worth highlighting via the media when they come unstuck, thankfully others deemed it newsworthy as it is.

I didn't say it wasn't newsworthy. I said that we are short on resources because we get no financial support from ungrateful readers like you, coxo. We choose what to write. How fortunate for our readers, coxo. Go to your preferred site and stay there, please.

Across the country, it is time they imposed speed limits on road vehicles carrying dangerous goods; also these two part trucks which I often see jack-knifed up country. They race at ridiculous speeds in all lanes, literally forcing other vehicles to get out of their bullying way.

In many countries such vehicles are made to display a maximum permitted speed limit sticker & are restricted to the lanes they are allowed to use in multi-lane highways. The police enforce this rigidly with fairly high penalties imposed for breaking the rules. Time for Thailand to enter the 21st century as the roads country wide are now congested & highly dangerous.
