A Phuket airport worker is likely to pay a high price for duty free theft

Perfumes, Watches, Necklace Stolen in Duty Free Heist From Flight at Phuket Airport

Tuesday, December 1, 2015
PHUKET: Stewardesses on a flight about to depart from Phuket for Finland alerted authorities yesterday to the theft of duty free perfumes, watches, a neclace and two powerbanks.

Royal Thai Navy officers, airport security and investigators from Tachatchai Police Station arrested an airport worker - latest in a series of thieves caught at Phuket International Airport.

Air crew discovered the missing items from the duty free trolley about 1.30pm yesterday as they checked the manifest before Finnair flight AY038 took off for Helsinki.

Missing were eight perfumes of different brands, two powerbanks, five watches and a necklace, with a total value of about 200,000 baht.

Sittichai Srirat, 28, who had helped to load the aircraft, was swiftly arrested.

He told investigators he hoped to resell the items.

It was the third theft at the airport in five days, with a baggage handler arrested over the theft of a pair of pink women's runners from luggage and a Frenchman arrested at the weekend in the departure lounge for thieving an Italian man's mobile telephone.

Phuket airport is not a big but is a important tourist airport.
It's reputation is on steak.
I know that most employees in different departments and shops on Phuket airport know each other.
It is time the Phuket airport management gets her act together and screen job applicants on their past job(s) performance, plus a 'no crime record' from police authorities.

The problem is likely to be in contract roles, not among direct airport employees, Kurt.

I am impressed that the thief was quickly caught. Appreciably, some will say, this was made public only because the thief was caught, However, in the old days, this theft would most likely have gone unsolved. The thief must have been rather desperate or very stupid to attempt this as it was obvious who the likely thief was. The arriving cabin crew inventoried before exiting the aircraft and locked the duty free with a seal. The next cabin crew does an entry inventory, checking the security seals. If the seals are broken it indicates a security alert and a no nonsense response.

No, Mr Editor, that is not the main thing.
The main issue is the sloppy airport staff application.
When it is just like that, stealing a few things here and there, mmh,let it be. A police photo safari, and every body happy with the photo. But the main issue is among them can be 'sleeping terrorists', bringing stuff on board aircrafts you would not like to imagine. Wake up!

Maybe a certain duty free shop slipped in a free gift with that lot.
