The work-stopping, traffic-stopping throng in Patong last night

Patong Throng Stops Work and Traffic to Back Extended Opening

Sunday, January 29, 2012
PHUKET: Thousands of workers from bars in Patong stopped the traffic last night as they gathered in support of a request to a senior government official to extend the opening hours of venues.

Tourists mingled with the crowd. Pheu Thai Party spokesman Phrompong Nopparit accepted the letter asking for the extension and undertook to make sure it was passed on to the Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra.

The President of the Patong Entertainment Association, Weerawit Kuressombut, presented the letter to Khun Phrompong about 10.30pm.

Bars and other venues in Patong and around Phuket have been ordered to shut at 2am by the Interior Ministry.

On-time closure is being strictly enforced by Phuket police following an attack that took place in an after-hours pub bar in Phuket City earlier this month in which Phuket resort owner-manager Vorasit ''Wan'' Issara was badly wounded.

On Monday, just before 2am, three Australians were attacked by between 10 and 15 locals at Rock City in Patong. The Australians, badly injured, say they were attacked from behind for no apparent reason.

Phuketwan has been told the Australians, now at home, plan to inform the Australian Government at the highest possible level about the incident and make sure other tourists are warned about the danger of encountering random violence on Phuket.

I remember some years ago in the UK when the Government brought in extended licensing laws. The cops and the Government were in favour of it. The pubs and clubs weren't. They said people had drunk enough by 2am and didn't really buy much more alcohol. People in Phuket could get used to a 2am threshold if they went out earlier. Personally, I think 3am is enough in strictly zoned areas. Whatever time they decide on, it needs to be enforced.

I had an evening out in Patong on Thursday and I saw no evidence of early closing then. We were able to party until 3 before I gave up and went home. Although I had seen the time enforced early on in the campaign, it appears to have slipped back again.

Let the marketplace speak. Go back to the old, wicked ways. That's why tourists from all over the world go there. Bars close at 2 AM in their countries so they want something different and naughty. It's Patong, not small town America or UK. You can just imagine the pressure being put on the local govt. who accept millions in baht from the local business in order to stay open late. Wanna bet on the outcome of this protest? Suckers bet.

MOB rules again just to hand over a letter? WHO runs the country here, anybody up for guessing? It's not the government or police, so rule them out. As a very big potential investor here in Thailand, I need answers and my time frame is within two months. Clean up or the investment money goes to another country.

A mob Dun? Mobs conjure up ideas of people running amok in the streets. This appears to have been a peaceful demo/protest, even though misguided. It is rather silly to protest aginst an existing law but TiT. A bit of a storm in a tea cup and I fail to see how the nightlife in Patong could affect your vast fortune.

Interesting story for me when i see one thai lady that stole my goldchain which i wore for rememberence of a killed soldier, friend of mine. I also see one thaiman that tried to break my arm in a famous nightspot because i got to close to the clowns in a unmarked VIP section. Shall I call the police.....nope. They do not move for I was probably what they call falang mau, drinking in the late hours.
