PHUKET: Police in Patong have purchased 10 bicycles and have begun making patrols along Phuket's most popular west coast bayside.
The Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, Colonel Jirapat Polchanaphan, told Phuket Governor tri Augkaradacha about the innovation at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City today.
If the presence of police on bicycles prevents motorcycles from using the Patong shorefront pedestrian pathways, it will save many injuries this coming high season.
Colonel Jirapat said the provision of the bicycles was part of the Patong Safety Zone project.
He added that lack of adequate English was often the cause of some fights between tourists and beach operators, especially tuk-tuk drivers and jet-ski and paraglider hirers.
''Police in Patong hope to be able to introduce English-language lessons designed to teach more venodrs what they can say and what they can't say,'' he told the governor's final meeting with Phuket media.
Colonel Jirapat added that signs are still needed to adequately designate public parking areas along the Patong beachfront from areas used by motorcycle and car hirers.
Signs were also needed to spell out the news fares now in the final stages of negotiation with tuk-tuk drivers and taxi drivers.

Amazing i always thought the mentioned operators actually spoke a better level of English than quite a few Thai's here on the island. They certainly know a lot of swear words anyway.
