Token arrests every now and then won't stop the drug problem in patong. I'm sure if the authorities without any warning ran a couple of properly trained [not locally trained] drug sniffer dogs around Bangla they wouldn't have enough room in the local nick to cope or the storage space for the yah ba, cocaine, heroin..........

That's right John...now they can be confined to a benevolent drug free institution where their lives will be so much more constructive...

John S. Perhaps you'd consider that drugs don't ruin people's lives, criminalisation of drugs is what actually ruins people's lives.

You won't win that debate in Thailand, MediaWatcher. And it's nonsense anywhere.

I know it won't happen but I wish every country would stop putting people in Jail unless they are serious repeat offenders trafficking and or selling drugs it is such a waist of time and money keeping so many people locked up. Better to put them to work in a Government run sweat shop were they can add something to society for a nice medium to long stay and the drug user and society both get something out of it.

I am not debating the morals of drug usage. Just pointing out criminalizing addicts doesn't work and is detrimental from everyone to the taxpayer to those incarcerated in a vicious circle. Ya ba was sold openly in Thailand in pharmacies until the USA doctrine was copied and so now yeah, it's a problem. Let them do drugs and make them cheap and observe a drop in petty violent crime. Alcohol abuse is just as destructive, why the hypocrisy ?
