PATONG, allegedly hard-hearted and hard-headed, took a ride towards helmet heaven yesterday with a motorcycle parade and a football game aimed at road safety awareness.

Already it appears as though more motorcyclists in Patong are following the lead of Phuket City and putting on head protection, even riding pillion.

The island-wide campaign for helmet safety begins on January 1, and Patong's parade yesterday was part of the important awareness phase.

Patong Mayor Pian Keesin and Patong Taxi Federation President Preechavude Keesin were among the dignitaries who joined Phuket Police Commander Pekad Tantipong in selling the safety message.

Phuket City's safety message has already proved successful, with the ''Phuket model'' being adopted elsewhere in Thailand as a means of persuading people of the importance of wearing helmets.

Phuketwan supports the Mothers or Motorcycles (MoM) action group in its campaign to increase road safety awareness.

another steve.....and don't forget that we all know where the check points are, so as long as we avoid those areas, it doesn't matter

Even in more rural areas in Thailand, I can see now a lot of helmets during the day time. Do I think it is funny only until 5 pm? Sure. But I know, that if you start a habit, it takes time to develop.

So I think, if you get the kids on board and keep the pressure on helmet for some time, you will see a critical mass of motor bike travelers who will put on a helmet, because they are used to it. Same with the safety belts.

Change starts small, but one year from now you will see only a small margin of people without helmets.

Why Patong? Why focus on tourists who do/do not wear helmets? In all fairness, they're here for two weeks and then they're gone. Let's focus on the Thai nationals, who are here every day of their lives (and who rarely wear a helmet). They're under-ticketed, since the cops are going for the Farang fine $.

What I'd really love to see is the cops pulling over people without helmets, then SELLING them brightly colored "shame helmets" for a fee rather than simply collecting a fine and then releasing the helmetless driver. The "shame helmets" could be marked with unique ID numbers, so that if someone throws their newly "earned" helmet in a roadside ditch after "buying" it, the cops could track him down and fine him for a second offense.

The focus is very much on Thais and it's island-wide from January 1 but there's one law for all, so visitors have to follow the rules as well.

Why they didn't start to teach the young people and the parents when they go and come out from school??? Try to get a look in the morning at what happens in front of the school... even the police bring the children at school without the helmet!

Editor Comment:

Schools in Phuket City have signed with police to help enforce helmet awareness. Students are warned, then docked marks for not wearing helmets. That will spread island-wide in 2011.

This campaign was introduce early this year, and there has been good progress. But as always we still get the negative people. People have worked so hard towards enforcement of the safe helmet law. So instead of all the negatives, give some praise. No one said it would change overnight, it is going to take time. And in the short time the law has been enforced, lives have been saved.
