The German government is now officially growing kratom whilst Thailand continues to demonize a very useful natural product. It's suppression was rooted in the fact it can be grown for free whilst opium was taxable.

You can buy strong and dangerous drugs without any prescription, but when you want kratom police is not as generous.

Even in Europe it is divided on.

Allowed in Germany, Austria, Norway but not in Denmark or Sweden.

What exactly is an arresting volunteer? Are they Thai or foreigners? It is not clear. If Thai they obviously have the authority to arrest someone. How can a farang tell whether he is being arrested by a real policeman or a volunteer or by some opportunist robber?

Editor Comment:

Volunteers are used by districts throughout Thailand in enforcement roles, usually under supervision. Do what you would do in every country: ask to see ID.
