Surin beach today with a parasail operating on the wide sandy spaces

Parasailers Expand to Surin as Fate of Phuket Jet-Skis, Speedboats is Awaited

Friday, October 24, 2014
PHUKET: Locals at Surin beach today were alarmed at the appearance of a parasailer who began touting for business on the broad stretch of sand.

A bananaboat adventure ride float was anchored offshore, also waiting for customers.

Surin is supposed to be free of jet-skis and parasailers but jet-skis have operated there for years with impunity.

The rules are supposed to be enforced by Phuket's Marine Office 5.

With Phuket's new cleared beaches stretching out with no sunbeds or umbrellas on them, more parasailers may take the opportunity to make money with all that public space.

Jet-ski operators are not allowed to park on the sands at any Phuket beaches, Royal Thai Navy 3 Commander Vice Admiral Saiyan Prasongsomret said on Tuesday.

It is believed the same ruling would also apply to parasail speedboats, which have crews organising takeoffs and landings on Phuket beaches, especially at Patong.

As Phuketwan first reported on Wednesday, a public meeting at Patong Council offices next Monday may decide whether jet-skis and parasail speedboats have a future on Phuket.

Patong Mayor Chalermlak Kebsub says that the Kathu District Chief, Phuket Marine Office 5, residents, and representatives from jet-skis and parasail speedboats would attend the gathering at 10am.

Phuket authorities met at Phuket Provincial Hall today and decided to coordinate teams who will patrol the beaches to enforce the rules.

Each team is likely to include representatives from the Army, the Navy, local police and municipal officers.

One concern is that efforts are likely to be made quite often by vendors to return to Phuket's beaches as the high season approaches.

Tourists who have not read about the removal of sunbeds and umbrellas are likely to ask where they've gone.

I will like to believe it, but the past has shown the will be nothing change.
Always the same, talk a lot, but nothing happened.I am sure that the jet-ski will stay and go on as always. That nobody lose his face (and money).
Today Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala and Surin, everywhere i see a lot of Jet-Ski parking in the sand.To save this island, please forbiden all jet skis and parasailing boats on quite Phuket. Please immediately. And by the taxis there is noting better, just more expensive. How long it will be before the tourists finally realize that they are only fooled here.

I have seen those crack-downs for over 30 years!
I am an optimist in general, but surly never had more than a smile on my face whenever reading or hearing about a 'crack-down'.
Sadly, Thailand's Leaders will not even wake-up when when tourism will collapse and its neighbors are 10 miles ahead.

Editor Comment:

Always expect the unexpected. The military are different: they mean what they say. Don't think that change won't happen. It's inevitable.

Dear Editor
I wish and pray you are right!
Personally, I know that the 'army system' has the same ethics and priorities as our police system!
I do however have faith and hope with General Prayuth!

Jet-ski that are operated at many other destinations are do NOT operate off the beach like in Phuket.
Let's take French Polynesia, that in every sense is more expensive destination:
they offer excellent
2 hours island circle tour - Huahine is., Bora Bora is., Moorea is.
guided (!) - a guide, who speaks FR/EN, on a separate jet
you get a snorkeling gear, and a jet has compartments for it, for camera, etc.
it includes stop at an islet fir refreshment
AND it costs just 100EUR-150EUR per person, two persons sharing, i.e.
just 200-300EUR (8000-12000THB) for TWO hours, with a guide, for 2 pax
AND no gang will screw you later for 1000EUR for fictions damages at hyperinflated cost..
AND it represents a great value - a price for 2 pax for 2 hrs is coming arithmetically close to the one in Phuket; you get a guide, snorkeling stops, cocktails on a motu... ; and it is not just boring movement along Patong beach from Nakalay bay toward Tritrang and back.
It can be seen that jet-ski in Phuket offers mediocre value vs. those ones in French Polynesia.
FP otherwise is pretending to be a champion in offering lowest value for the price , so jet-ski case is very much not in favor of Phuket
There are very few beaches on those islands, it is mostly just waterfront, that how it differs from Phuket.
But other upmarket islands like BVI, and that have a number of swimming beaches, banned jet ski at all.
Phuket still can make a choice out of two concepts - operates jet-skis, say, off pontoons, or ban it altogether.

8 tuk tuks illegally parked on the corner outside the Surin Soccer Stadium at 9am this morning- Surin seems to be slipping backwards rapidly. The momentum needs to be maintained to keep these people under control.

The parasail operators and 6 jetski's have been at Surin all last week. Those jetskis that were not parked on the beach were buzzing around in the water in between the flags touting for customers and filling the air with the smell of boat fuel. I was concerned for the children in our group who were swimming and duck diving around the area and could easily pop up to the surface in front of one of them.

Oh please.
I just got back from two week holiday in Patong and there ARE Jetski and parasailing vendors all along the place. One embarrassing experience was when I was approaching the water to swim, I was barked at by the parasailing "staff" I could not understand them and thought they were just asking me if I wanted to parasail - After hearing "You will die not me" I stopped and asked what was their problem, they were yelling at me to move as I was walking in the "landing" area. This was followed by witnessing them moving people who were sunbathing too close to the parachute landing site - I have never seen this type of behaviour before OR parasailers on this particular side of the beach (I have been here 4 times). I have lost my nice quiet area to relax (as well as sunbeds which I knew were gone) and to argue that there is plenty of shade for tourists on the beach as an alternative to a sunbed is VERY laughable. Furthermore during the two weeks there was an incident of two tourists crashing their Jetskis. Take the parasailing and Jetskis OFF the beach, bring back the sunbeds

I've got once into a minor scuffle with the Lord of Parasails and his Assistants on Kata Beach when I on principle rejected to move off my bathing location when they requested, and informed them that beach is a public space, then they became very aggressive .

If to complain then it would work if you do this simultaneously on local, regional and country level, but giving instability of Yingluck's government at that time to write a letter "Dear Prime Minister..." was meaningless at that moment .
However I have some pics and video , so it is always possible to compile a slide-show + video in order to inform a wider audience.

@ Sue
Post the video and pictures Sue, put it on You Tube and all the social media sites, the BBC travel show, send it to the newspapers worldwide, give this deplorable behaviour the widest publicity
