The dolphinarium in southern Phuket: Officials are checking the venue

Officials from Bangkok Checking Phuket's Dolphinarium Venue

Wednesday, November 5, 2014
PHUKET: Officials from the Department of Fisheries in Bangkok were inspecting the dolphinarium in southern Phuket today to assess whether it's an appropriate venue.

The round-shaped dolphinarium, near Phuket Zoo, off Chao Fa Road East, appears to be complete and awaiting only its star attractions to begin performances.

However, a strong campaign by environmentalists has led to Thai authorities more closely examining the venture.

The environmentalists say that shows involving dolphins are being closed down in other parts of the world, although massive numbers still attend performances at the most popular outlets.

Whether the dolphinarium is granted permission to operate is seen by many as a test of whether Phuket is a forward-thinking tourist destination, aiming to align with nature, or still stuck in the 20th century with out-of-date ideas that will quickly lose their appeal as tourists' tastes change.

A Phuketwan reporter was refused permission to enter the site this morning.

Let experts give their opinion about pool sizes, spare tanks, water quality and so on. Put the animals wellbeing first in mind. Don't give the dolphins a life in Hell. To show tourists 45 minutes a fake "fun & happy" performance. The only Good & Happy place for the Dolphins is there where they belong. In the Sea.

If this show gets the go ahead, it will be up there with the pit bull dog fights, cock fights and the bare knuckle fist fights. Yes these events take place once or twice a week, if you know where to find them. Who said Pa Klock???

Stories like this only remind me of the reasons I left Thailand over a year ago. Short sighted greed, lack of concern for animal welfare and contempt for world opinion are but three of them.

"aiming to align with nature, or still stuck in the 20th century with out-of-date ideas that will quickly lose their appeal as tourists' tastes change."

Seems to be a two track approach here- no condemnation of captive tigers in the other reports last month week.

Editor Comment:

We are not PC for the sake of being PC. Dolphins have oceans in which to swim. Tigers raised in captivity have no place in what little is left of their natural environment. What we've said is that the government should be responsible for caring for tigers, not private enterprise.

odd how Thailand does things don't they have a town planning process for approval before they turn the first sod or any construction commences no they build it then set about a approval process, This is a special purpose building if approval is not issued what do they do with it after spending mega baht or are they very sure it will be approved because certain wheels have been oiled one does speculate, ED can you enlighten us on town planning processes here as seems the cart is in front of the horse with how due process should work.

Our understanding is that the authorities who check the quality of construction don't have to know the purpose of the building. That's somebody else's responsibility.

"A basic precept in Buddhism is that of non-harm. Actions which result in the taking of life, directly or indirectly, contradict this basic Buddhist precept" therefore if the dolphins die a slow mental and physical death this is against Buddhism and therefore Thailand's main religion. What ever religion you are keeping highly intelligent animals in a cage that is about the same a keeping a person in a room a few meters in size is terribly cruel similar to jail and the main reason - MONEY. A recent poll showed the vast majority of people both Thai and non Thai were against this. Thailand is a democracy.

It's the classic one step forward, and two steps backwards. Is there no depths to which Thailand will stoop to try and attract tourists ? Do they not realise that this will only be counter-productive, especially from tourists who are aware of such environmentalist issues? Or is it just plain ignorance on their part that they are oblivious to public opinion, especially from foreigners?

@Feisty Farang. Your Point of VieW is very Valid. I like. I want to add. When we put a Human in Jail it is because of proven guilt and so for punishment. What is the "Crime" the Dolphin committed? They Survived a Human "witch-hunt/Dolphin masacra" in Japan from Human killers. "The Cove" it proofs that we Humans are the destroying Animals on Earth.
Don't let Greed over rule Buddha's teachings and principles.

The very concept of a Dolphinarium runs counter to Phuket's open water paradise. We have dolphin swimming free around Phuket, so why should we allow this degenerate Russian Gulag in Phuket? This is the worst downside of the Russian invasion of our beautiful island. The TAT is to blame for promoting any high volume market so TAT officials can thump their chests with arrival numbers. A quality destination is not about numbers.

When will the TAT understand that Phuket deserves quality tourists who smile - not high-volume trash tourists).

Phuket needs quality tourists - and quality people will NOT patronize this dolphin prison!
