PHUKET: The Governor of Phuket, Nisit Jansomwong, praised the Royal Thai Navy yesterday for its role in rescuing survivors from three sinkings around the Phuket region this week.
''Whenever I have a problem, whether it be with safety at sea or perhaps a dispute involving sea gypsies and people who claim their land, I know the Navy will be ready and able to help,'' the governor told a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall.
A fourth person from the six-man crew of a sunken barge has been rescued, being plucked from the sea by a yacht.
The man, a 46-year-old Burmese, was picked up soon after by Marine Police and brought ashore on Hai island near Koh Lanta in Krabi province.
The man had spend four days at sea clinging to a floating object to survive.
Three others from the barge have been treated and allowed to leave Krabi hospitals. The Thai captain and a Burmese crew member remain missing.
An earlier report that all six had been rescued was not correct.
However, in the space of 24 hours, the Royal Thai Navy and Phuket Marine Police rescued 10 crew from a cargo boat that as washed onto rocks off Phuket and six people from a fishing trawler that sank in a monsoon storm.
Phuketwan has suggested that the Royal Thai Navy, which has a good record on environmental issues and especially the care of sea turtles, should be given responsibility for the care and protection of Phuket's beaches under a Phuket Beach Authority.

Maybe they should make a Navy Admiral the Governor of Phuket in that case.
