UPDATE Woman Jumps to Death From Phuket Pier into Wild Seas
By Sert Tongdee Wednesday, August 5, 2015
THE DROWNED woman has been identified as Sriwan Sarapoo, 49, who worked at the Coco Spa in Kathu as a masseuse. According to friends she had a gambling debt of more than 100,000 baht that concerned her greatly.
PHUKET: A mystery woman caught a motorcycle taxi to Rawai pier in southern Phuket to jump to her death in wild, stormy seas today.
Within two hours, Ruamjai Phuket Foundation paramedics pulled her to nearby Laem Ka beach, but there was no pulse.
Captain Wuttiwat Liangboonjinda of Chalong Police Station said: ''We don't know her identity. She had 180 baht in a pocket, along with a motorcycle key.''
The woman had short, dark hair and was aged about 35-40. She was wearing a white shirt and jeans.
Witnesses saw her arrive at the pier and jump about 8am but were powerless to help because of the height of the waves.
Her body was brought back to the beach by a longtail boat.
Police were hoping to talk to the motorcycle taxi rider who brought the woman to the pier so they could begin tracing her movements and uncover the reason why she jumped to her death.
Her body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

What a very sad way to end a life.
Real pity she had no-one to talk to, or mabe it was that no-one would listen to her.
I pray your identity becomes known to your family and friends for a proper burial?

100,000 (around $3000) Baht is a lot of money in Thailand when the average monthly salary is 15,000Baht. With the changing tourists demographics less money is going to the "high street" vendors etc and this is the middle of the low season. I know many people that have very little money maybe $50 to last a week. Times are tough for a lot of people who used to cater for Europeans who are in fewer numbers now.

FF represents views of those anti-Sino touristo-fascists who blames their inability to address key tourists markets in their native language and their inability to adapt their oferring to actual needs of that market on organic inborn faults of these markets themselves.
Actually Europeans solely for the reason that the rest of the World was much poorer, long time have been enjoying a lot of value for low price: get a hotel for 50USD per day in a wonderful place, spend 20USD per day on all possible F&D and live as a king - and then they wrongly believed that that is a sustainable standard.
Now when the rest of the World became richer, and demand for tourism is growing at fast pace, that leads to both inflation and all the usual spots naturally becoming more crowded, with all the economic and ecological consequences, they became unhappy.
Actually, to get more quality holidays, they simply have to move to into upper ladder, more expensive holiday spots if there are too many people who can afford cheaper ones.
Average North American will not even dream to have a holdays of the very minimum quality standard if he spends less than 200-300USD/per night -f less, then it is motel, some acceptable quality in vicinity of USA start at ca.500USD/per night, and real luxury at ca.1000USD/per night.
Chinese tourists in general have lower income level than European tourists, then the latter simply should not go for that cheap holidays that poor Chinese can finally afford, go to Bali where you will spend in Potato beach club 400USD/per head per day - and many Australians do, and there are quies at teh entrance before openeing, to KuDeTa to spend 200USD/per head, and again is full, and with Australians. "Oh no no no - Very expensive". To Bahamas, to quality Cancun etc. , where they would compete with people of teh same income, but not with those of much lower income. No, repeat of "No No No" tirade.
Chinese whether they are on package holidays or FIT statistically spend more on shopping than Europeans per day per head, and they spend more nights as an inbound market in Thailand in total, so the first parameter coupled with the second one makes Chinese an ideal target market, moreover there is a large potential for growth, if handled properly.
Tales that Europeans come for longer times doesn't matter, as what matter, first, how much is spent per day and then total number of nights spent. So that doesn't matter whether they spend for their 4 wk trips more than Chinese per their 10days trips,as long as a number of spent nights is much bigger.
What Europenas wants - and that was aired recently here on PW on behalf of them by an owner of some Phuket guesthouse - their "50USD holidays", less crowded and cheaper back - this will never happens, a number of tourists will only increase, and developed nations will have to spend higher % of their disposable incomes to reach quality holiday destinations.
Again, tales that "I will go to Vietnam, Cambodia, Phillipens etc." and will find their the paradise taht nown is lost in Thailand is simply incometent non-sense,as either these destinations are not well attended because of their natural climatic or similar deficiencies like Vietnam, or indeed are paradise only in the yes of incompetent traveller, e.g. Boracay, or fantasies of swimming beach on Bali, if there are geologically virtually none of them.
And yes, to accommodate growing numbers of tourists in Thailand , you simply can't overlook ecological issues, incl. that it's not possible to accommodate needs of all visitors who wish to get a sunbed - so , then you have to remove all them for the sake of sustainability - and yes, that fits Chinese market.
Those ideas to auction say 10% of beach for sunbed renting are carzy - people who express them assume that then they will get a sunbed for 200THB or so - giving the demand it will convert those place into excusive highpriced becah clubs - in Florida a sunbed/cabana in such places cost 100-300USD, yes, you're getting frozen grapes etc. but these are minor frills - and there can be demand for that stuff at such prices, obviously people who offer that can't believe that they will be so outpriced from that market.
So, in short adapt to the new order - more emerging markets tourist, more crowded, hence lower quality and higher prices, no sunbeds, and if you want better environment move to more extensive holiday destination.
Don't forget that long-stay destination criteria and parameters differs form short-term tourism, few people go to live for a long time at Bora Bora.

Very sorry to hear this. It wasn't as bad as she thought.
I'm also sorry that money is so paramount in our world. It doesn't have to be that way.
