PHUKET: The mother of a pregnant woman who was raped by 17-year-old twins intends to confront her daughters' attackers at the Phuket juvenile detention centre - but she needs some extra strength first.
''I think it was obvious that my daughter was pregnant,'' the mother said today. ''After they kicked her from her motorcycle, she told them she was pregnant.
''She waied them and begged them not to rape her. Yet both of them went ahead. They showed no sign of caring.''
The twins cannot be identified for legal reasons but residents in northern Phuket know who they are.
In the aftermath of the confessed rape on Saturday night on a dark road in Mai Khao, about 1000 people brought all traffic to a halt on Phuket's main thoroughfare for seven hours on Wednesday, delaying international flights and ensnaring hundreds of tourists in a massive traffic snarl.
The crowd was upset at not being able to ask the twins to apologise when a planned police reenactment was cancelled. Police were also accused of beating up local youths before they arrested the twins. Four officers have since been suspended.
Had the twins been 18, they would have been named and would now be facing the much greater penalties that come with being adults, including imprisonment in Phuket's overcrowded jail.
The mother of the 25-year-old victim, who is still receiving treatment for her physical injuries and mental anguish, said today she was deeply upset to think that such a thing could happen on Phuket.
''It is as though a knife has been plunged into my heart,'' she said. ''Most parents try to bring up their children well and I just cannot believe these two boys could behave in this fashion. Everyone loves their children. In this case, what kid of 'love' have they had?
''My daughter realised she was in danger. She waied them. She told them she was pregnant, as anyone could see at five months. She asked them to spare her.
''And still they raped her. I ask all parents on Phuket to please teach your children properly. Do not let this be repeated.''
