Concern grows for Brett Bean, who left washing on the line on Phuket

Missing Phuket Surfer Left Washing on the Line and Vanished

Wednesday, December 5, 2012
PHUKET: American surfer Brett Bean, missing on Phuket, has left his rented bungalow in unusual circumstances, a Phuket neighbor said yesterday.

The Swiss man, who wishes to remain anonymous, says Brett's motorcycle has gone. Uncharacteristically, there was washing hanging outside at the bungalow in Kata-Karon, on Phuket's west coast.

''He was a pleasant guy, didn't smoke or drink,'' said the neighbor, who responded to a Phuketwan appeal for information about Brett.

US embassy officials are expected to organise a police search of Brett's bungalow as soon as possible to see whether his passport or papers relating to the motorcycle are inside.

The 43-year-old surfer's parents, Lynne and Wayne, are in California anxiously awaiting news from Phuket about their missing son.

A reliable person, he failed to use his seats on flights from Phuket to Los Angeles as scheduled last week.

As an easy-going man without an extended social circle, it has taken several days for someone to come forward to locate Brett Bean's home adress and make further inquiries.

His disappearance is uncharacteristic, said his Swiss neighbor at the bungalows in Kata-Karon.

''I liked him,'' the neighbor said. ''We got on well.''

Each man would head home to the US or Switzerland for part of the year, so they briefly overlapped, with each keeping an eye on the other man's rented bungalow.

Questions are now being asked among Brett's acquaintances at the southern surfing end of Kata beach, where he frequented at least one local restaurant.

The Swiss neighbor also said Brett did not keep a surf board at the bungalow, so his board may have been stored close to the beach.

It was Brett's habit to spend several months on Phuket then part of the year in the US, where he worked as a ski instructor, his parents said.

''He told us on November 25 that he had turned off his phone and internet service, as he does every year before he leaves Thailand,'' Brett's mother Lynne said.

''That was the last contact that we had with him.''

Missing Person flyers seeking information describe Brett Chapman Bean as having blond hair, blue eyes and fair skin. He is 6 feet 2 in and could be bearded or clean-shaven.

He rides a light grey Honda 125cc motorcycle.

Anyone who sights Brett should contact the US Embassy in Bangkok on 02 2054049 or after hours on 02 2054000, or contact Phuketwan via the Comments space at the end of this article.

I hope they find this man, he seems a caring person who fed the street dogs and also kept under control by not drinking excessively. It sounds unlikely he made any enemies who would harm him.
