MediaWATCH Extra: 18 Months More for Suu Kyi

Tuesday, August 11, 2009
wsj.com A court in Burma has found pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kui guilty of violating her house arrest, but the head of the military-ruled country says she can serve out an 18-month sentence under house arrest. The court initially sentenced Ms Suu Kyi on Tuesday to a three-year prison term. But after a five-minute recess, the country's home minister entered the courtroom and read aloud a special order from junta chief Than Shwe. The order said Than Shwe was cutting the sentence in half to 18 months and that it could be served under house arrest.

nytimes.com Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader, was sentenced Tuesday to three years of hard labor, but her sentence was commuted to a new term under house arrest of up to 18 months, diplomats reported. She was put on trial after an American intruder swam across a lake in downtown Yangon and spent two nights at her lakeside villa in early May. The intruder, John Yettaw, 53, of Falcon, Missouri, was sentenced Tuesday to seven years of hard labor, according to the diplomats, who were reached by telephone in Yangon, the main city in Myanmar, the former Burma.

Associated Press A Thai court has rejected a US request to extradite Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer dubbed the ''Merchant of Death,'' to face terrorism charges. The judge said the US has 72 hours to indicate if an appeal will be filed, and, if not, Bout will be set free.
