PHUKET: Maverick MP Chuvit Kamolvisit will tour Phuket with a parliamentary committee this week to try to find alleged casinos on the holiday island, a senior policeman said today.
The policeman, General Pisan Juldilok, Deputy Commander of Region 8 Southern Headquarters, said he was probably the officer named as ''J'' by Khun Chuvit. ''J'' allegedly masterminded the casinos.
''My nickname is 'Jeab' so the 'J' named by Khun Chuvit is most likely me,'' General Pisan said. ''I usually stay at Royal Phuket City when I visit Phuket and now that too is said to be a gambling centre.
''I suspect these people are trying to discredit me because, far from controlling gambling, I've made sure it doesn't happen on Phuket.''
General Pisan said Region 8 police would support regular checks at Phuket's Tachatchai Checkpoint - the main entrance to the island - from today until April 17, concentrating especially on possible illicit gas and fuel.
He also said police patrols would be intensified in Patong's famous Soi Bangla walking street over Songkran New Year next weekend, with officers on foot aiming to be there around the clock.
Too-sexy displays over the Songkran water festival would be banned, he added.
Khun Chuvit and the parliamentary committee would be on Phuket Thursday and Friday, General Pisan said, with special attention being paid to alleged casino sites in Phuket City, Chaofa East Road, Patong and Tungthong.
