PHUKET: More than 80 Royal Thai Navy personnel and volunteers raided an island between Phuket and Phang Nga early today and arrested a man they believe may be a drugs kingpin.
Although there were no drugs found in the raid, authorities think Danai Homhon, 36, originally from Phuket, know more than he has told officials so far.
Raiders also took possession of a gun, having been told that gunshots often scare away tourist boats or fishing trawlers that approach Nam island without welcome.
Two others were believed to have escaped as the raiding party arrived overnight.
The island is public land but one large house and a smaller house were found by the arresting group, who carried an official warrant.
Khun Danai, who was alleged to be high on drugs at the time of his apprehension even though no drugs were confiscated, is alleged to have taken over the 200-rai island about 10 years ago.
He was being questioned today at Thalang Police Station.
