Major Phuket Traffic Diversion to Slow Flow Through Tesco Junction for Four Months

Wednesday, December 3, 2014
PHUKET: A major diversion for four months of the east-west route through Phuket City's Tesco Lotus intersection is to be announced today by Phuket traffic authorities.

The turn-left only detour from tomorrow until March 1 will enable construction of the upper deck on top of the underpass.

Motorists proceeding from Phuket City to Patong or Patong to Phuket City will turn left into the bypass road then do u-turns at the first available opportunity before turning left again to continue on their way at the intersection.

Motorists proceeding from Phuket City to Phuket International Airport will be obliged to turn left from Yaowarat Road in Samkong, do a u-turn outside Phuket International Hospital then proceed straight on down the bypass road.

North-south traffic along the bypass road will proceed as normal but the amount of u-turn traffic may slow the flow. Tourists and expats departing the island may need to allow a little extra time to negotiate the intersection.

Motorists are advised to use the alternative route between Patong and Phuket City, along Vichitsongkram Road and through the Central Festival Phuket junction, where the other underpass is almost complete.

Officials from the Road Department were briefing traffic police today in advance of tomorrow's major long-term diversion.

Perfect timing, just as the high-season is beginning.

One would expect such major projects to be scheduled done during the low season, causing a lot less disruption.

Instead this coincides with the peak high season.

Oh, now that is major!

It would be interesting to know if any of the engineers and decisionmakers would now concede an overpass with much less disruption (no unforseen underground pipes to worry about) and much lower cost would have been the best option. If so it's not too late to reconsider an overpass for Chalong ....and I know this is stretching things how about provision for light rail?

Editor Comment:

My recollection is that underpasses are preferred because people don't want to see Bangkok-style overpasses while on holiday. In Chalong, it may be more a case of whatever works best.

I'm not sure who plans this schedule! But I wouldn't be surprised to see the work slow down after high season 2104, then start up again in high season 2015 and finish in 2018.

Not sure the "high-season/low-season" debate is all that important now.....The disruptions have already hit several high AND low seasons.
Meanwhile the traffic heading south past Kajonkiet School and the new Dybbuk Hospital, (AWAY from the roadworks), is so horrendous now, one wonders if the cars speeding through the new underpass will form the new tailback somewhere near Central

It's actually 3 months so I feel better already. Except when I take my kid to school in the morning! Holiday travelers probably don't like to see the big ugly billboards either! The more expensive the project, the more money changes hands.

One somehow starts to get the feeling with the timing of projects like this and the current attitude of the Immigration Office in Phuket Town that foreigners are to be discouraged at all costs from wanting to be in Phuket at present.
