Krabi Speedboat Captain Rams Island Beach to Save Lives of Chinese Tourists
By Chutima Sidasathian Wednesday, November 11, 2015
PHUKET: A frantic speedboat captain rammed his vessel ashore on a day-trip island off Phuket late today rather than risk the lives of tourists in a sinking at sea.
Eight Chinese tourists - five men and three women - were on the Nong Hong Te as the captain realised the speedboat was taking water and could not safely make the trip back to Krabi.
The day-trip for the guests from Krabi's Holiday Inn to Phi Phi went wrong as sundown closed in.
The 8.4 metre speedboat was rammed onto sand at Kai island, with Marine Police and a team from the Chao Fay Rescue Centre rapidly on the scene soon after.
Seven of the eight Chinese tourists listed their names as LaoCe, Taecy, Niko, Nicole, Guame, Rose and Lictna. Another crewman was also on board.

The Captain did exactly the right thing for the situation. A captain's primary responsibility is always passenger safety, and intentional grounding is a much safer option than sinking. He should be commended, and I doubt that it was "frantic".

If you weren't there you will never know, T, and you will just have to live with your doubt.
It's not doubt Ed. It's knowledge gleaned from 35 years as an international sea captain and years of training. The passengers (and yes, the crew) are quite safe. Boats can be fixed, and grounding is a common procedure in this circumstance.

You weren't there, were you T? So you have no more knowledge about what took place than any other reader. The procedure is obvious. No surprises there. Was it done with ease or with difficulty? You have no way of knowing. Stop the guesswork, please. Surely so much experience and training has taught you not to rely on guesswork?
Ed, you will be sorely missed when you leave.

Thank you, Not Ed. We will miss you too, and your silly attacks on us.
Ed, your level of journalism does not match the level of your ego which is reflected in attacks on your readers. Very sad.

I don't ''attack'' readers, Ego , but I do challenge foolishness. I can tell you that experience is not the same thing as being there. Perhaps your ''Ego'' prevents you from understanding that. A widely-experienced captain of 35 years can think he knows it all. But the Titanic did sink, didn't it?
There are a thousand factors that come into play in every incident at sea. Nobody who wasn't there knows how close this vessel was to sinking. Nobody who wasn't there knows how far it was from shore. The procedure is obvious. The execution is not.
I don't have an ego, ''Ego.'' I don't need one. Good luck with yours.

What John intended to say was ''Thanks Ed for highlighting the facts. So many commenters here don't realise that you and your reporters are not interested in generalisations or guesswork, but facts. Please keep up the good work. We appreciate all of your efforts, and the wonderful free news service. I for one will be sorry to see it go.''
(John also occasionally uses the names Nick and Adrien.)
@ed- 'If you weren't there' how would you know the captain was frantic?? sounds like he was calm and collected to me..

''sounds like'' is guesswork, another steve. How foolish to rely on guesswork from an article that obviously leaves many questions unanswered - because the answers weren't known when the article was written. But some PW readers already know all the answers . . . . how pleasant it will be to no longer have to point out obvious flaws in logic.

I think, T, you can either rely on our reporter's version of events or wait and catch up with the news a day or two days later at other sites. Simple, eh? Nit-picking is a pointless activity of the brainless. Produce evidence of your 35 years' experience, give us a name that isn't make believe, prove your ability to see events without actually being there, and we'll give you some credibility. If that's impossible, please waste your time elsewhere.
Yes, I notice you eliminated my comments about selling ads with sensational speech and replaced it with something I didn't even write. You can do that. As the Editor, you have the power, but you and I know the truth don't we.

You have no more idea of ''the truth'' than anything else of value in life, T. But guesswork? Oh yes, you're good at that. Readers have been fortunate to be able to draw responses from the journalists who put this site together. To a few of them, self-importance is all that matters. That's sad. And of course, your commitment to ''the truth'' never includes a real name. That's shameful.
