Knife-Wielding Bag Snatcher Threatened Chinese Couple, Say Phuket Police

PHUKET: Police swiftly arrested a Phuket robbery suspect who threatened two Chinese tourists with a knife before fleeing with a woman's bag yesterday.

The knifepoint theft took place at 10.30am yesterday on Phuket's west coast beach road near the Kata viewpoint and the arrest came about 11pm last night when Sommai Promboot, 23, was nabbed at an apartment where a quantity of ya ice methamphetamine was also allegedly found.

Khun Sommai admitted the robbery and said he stole because he had lost his job, according to officers from Karon police station.

Tourist Ying Jun Zhou, 32, told police that Khun Sommai tried to grab the bag from the shoulder of his pillion-travelling companion but failed.

The bike fell over and Khun Sommai threatened the couple with a knife before fleeing with the bag and its contents, Ying Jun Zhou said.

In the bag was an IPhone5, and a Sony camera, but no cash. Khun Sommai was wise enough to wear a helmet.

When arrested thanks to security camera images, police found 2.93gm of ya ice and drug-taking equipment in Khun Sommai's apartment in Rassada.

end the failed war on drugs I would rather they just give the stuff to them for cheap and give them proper treatment than have them turn to crime to fund there bad habits.

The downside of the otherwise welcome downturn in tourism is people losing their jobs and some resorting to crime.

Economic slump equals increase in crime rate and make Phuket an even less attractive destination for tourists.

Personally I believe the only way to change the rip-off mentality of many here is by stopping the neverending flow of easy prey landing at HKT every day.

@smithy no excuses no sympathy's this poor kid is a drug taking or trafficking thieving young criminal escalating to a career criminal if his ways are not adjusted by appropriate punishment pronto.
