The dead man's Ducati lies beside the ditch on Phuket's coast road

UPDATE Italian Killed in Coast Road Ducati Crash: Death Toll Hits Five in 15 Hours

Saturday, August 9, 2014
UPDATING All Day, Every Day

Winai Luksanawilas, 45, who was killed when his motorcycle clipped a van about 9pm past night near Rassada Fire Station, became Phuket's fourth fatality since 2pm - making the Italian who died on his Ducati the fifth to die within 15 hours.

Original Report

PHUKET: An Italian man who crashed his Ducati when he failed to take a bend on Phuket's coast road early today has taken the island's road toll to four in less than 15 hours.

The 32-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle while travelling from Patong to Karon about 5am on a bend above the Centara Grand.

The red-plate Ducati crashed into a roadside ditch. The man, who was not wearing a helmet, appeared to suffer severe head injuries.

His name has been provided to Phuketwan but we will refrain from publishing it until we are sure his relatives have been contacted.

Two teenagers - the male driver and one of four young female passengers - were killed about midnight in a single vehicle crash when a car smashed into a pole in Kathu.

A golf caddy travelling pillion died when the rider of a motorcycle lost control and ran into oncoming traffic close to Phuket City at 2.10am yesterday.

Not judging in this particular case but very powerful motorbikes, many nightclubs and bars open way past their closing time, virtually zero drink and drink testing by Police and there will be many more fatalities. I think more tourists would come to Phuket if they did not have to read such bad news like this so often. Some tourists must think it is a lawless place.

@Sky - you are right - just before that corner (downhill) the road is in a very bad condition ! But no excuse - probadly to high speed anyway - RIP

I drive that part of road (Patong-Karon) about twice a day. The location of the accident is in horrible condition, you have to hit the right line between the potholes to the centimeter to avoid undesirable reaction of your motorbike. Sometimes it gets repaired, which will last for about 2 weeks. :-(

@Fiesty Farang what a caring, thoughtful individual you are - a man died show some respect - there are appropriate times to make your opinions known - now is not one of them - RIP

Extrapolating the fatalities, it makes for one every 3 hours, or 8 a day, or 2,920 per year.If Phuket has a million people, at the rate of 8 deaths a day, it would mean .3% of Phuketians would die annually on the roads. Still too low for authorities to act. It would have to reach about .5% before alarm bells went off, TIT

Bad news indeed, but I also think more attention has to be paid to the people who rent the bikes out, just recently found out a friends daughter who is 15 managed to rent a bike and she had to show ID to rent the bike and this particular ID is in English and Thai

@Terry I did say "Not judging in this particular case" any death by accident is tragic. My comment is not meant to be insensitive but to try to improve safety for everyone. Phuket has a very high road traffic death rate and there are reasons why as BeerChang mentions road standards as not the same as Western countries and potholes can occur after each rain. We are now in the rainy season. Alcohol sales are late and cheap there are many possible ways to decrease road deaths. If I was not sad when I read these stories I would not comment.

yes sad..high powered new motorbike in the early hours of the morning..I guess fortunate that the guy who killed himself did not take any innocents with him.Perhaps some enterprising tuk tuks or taxis etc could hang around bars etc in Patong etc to offer "take you home and pick you up and return in the morning" transport..even 10kbt would be better than the morgue methinks? Blaming roads and conditions?..is no one responsible for their own actions?

Feisty farrang, you must be getting old and silly to think people will not come to phuket, because what they read.
