A SPECTACULAR blaze that turned heads in Patong skywards on Friday afternoon turned out to be not really such a hot story after all.
The general manager of the Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Patong Beach, Sigrid Stelling, told Phuketwan that what looked like a raging inferno in media photographs was actually a superficial fire among scaffolding and screening that caused no real damage.
She said that by next week, new scaffolding and screening would replace the burned material.
The resort, one of three Courtyards by Marriott that are scheduled to open on Phuket this year, would be completed in the third quarter of 2008 as planned, she said.
The Patong resort was once the Grand Tropicana Phuket but is being substantially remodelled.
''There was a lot of fire and smoke but it was all among the scaffolding and the screening, mostly high up and on one corner of the building,'' Ms Stelling said.
''It lasted for about 20 minutes. The brigade was on the scene very quickly.
''Because it was all on the outside, the fire was fanned by the breeze and looked like a bad one. In fact, no serious damage was done.''
Fire officers are still investigating the cause of the blaze, she added.
The other two Courtyards by Marriott are to open in Kamala and Surin.
