The mangled wreck of the car that struck a pole at speed at midnight

Horror Smash on Phuket Curve Kills Two, Injures Three Teens

Saturday, August 9, 2014
PHUKET: The driver and a woman passenger were killed as a car returning to Phuket City from Patong at speed smashed into a pole at midnight last night.

The driver was aged 18. His dead passenger was aged 17.

Three more young passengers, all female, are being treated for their injuries at Vachira Phuket Hospital after the horror crash on a sweeping curve in Phra Phuket Keaw Road, near the new Bangchak petrol station.

The youngest survivor is aged 16.

Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers removed the injured from what remained of the vehicle.

The driver, a man, was already dead. All four women were taken by ambulance to the hopsital in Yaowarat Road, Phuket City, where one died soon after.

The road was dry at the time of the crash and speed appeared to be a factor, police said.

Kusoldharm rescuers needed ''jaws of life'' cutters to free some victims. The work took 20 minutes.

Police believe the Honda City struck the median strip then crashed on into the pole.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt and an airbag failed to save him.

Questions are likely to be asked about the care taken by parents of the dead and injured to make sure their children were safe.

The dead and injured have been named as:

Killed Hatsanee Wangtan, 18; Sutanee Tabtawee, 17.

Injured Sawaroij Sangtong, 18; Natsarin Suportnemhiran, 17; Supitsara Boonmee, 16.

A sad tragedy but one repeated all to often in Thailand. I really do wish traffic and highway police would do some meaningful speed enforcement.

So so sad, but as we all know quite common in Thailand, when will the authorities wake up to proper driver training , it would save a lot of lives.....

Among young car drivers and motorcycle riders have to correct traffic education already in the school and even better is a brainwashing. I do not think the traffic behavior in Thailand is better soon.

Phuket has Traffic Police? Sometimes I see traffic police cars clearing the road for influencial people to 'push' them through traffic to their hotels. Why is there no traffic police on the roads to patrol the 'normal' traffic? What are the costs of such tragedies? When is the police starting to function properly? This is a sad case.

Editor Comment:

There can be no ''pursuit'' police in the built-up areas of Phuket because of the chaotic nature of traffic and the obvious danger to other travellers. Speed cameras are a safer option.
