Harsh New Thailand Media Laws Quickly Modified After Protests

Harsh New Thailand Media Laws Quickly Modified After Protests

Tuesday, July 22, 2014
PHUKET: A new edict by the National Council for Peace and Order has been issued today that countermands and softens media controls imposed on Friday. The changes come after protests from media groups and journalists' organisations. Edict 103/2557 rescinds Item 3.2 of edict 97/2557 under which criticism of the NCPO was forbidden and Item 5 that empowered governors and police chiefs in provinces to close down media organisations.

I'm glad they cancelled those orders.

I thought they were by far the worst consequences of the coup so far.

Alarmingly they reveal the true intentions and mindset of the Junta.

I expect things to get a lot worse before they get better.

If the orders revealed the ''mindset'' of the junta, then the mindset only lasted three days, ThaiMike, which isn't much of a mindset. The fact the harsh aspects were modified so quickly is an indication that the military is prepared to listen to reason. What you expect is pure Doomsayer, devoid of logic.

Mr Editor, your logic is deeply flawed. The initial directive did indeed reveal the junta's mindset. They then bowed to public pressure and changed the directive. You choose to put the emphasis on the change of heart. I choose to put the emphasis on the original intent which is far more revealing.

As someone who works in the media, I was extremely concerned at Friday's edict. But the acceptance of ''public pressure,'' as you put it, makes it plain for the first time that the generals are not only good learners but good listeners, too. It's not just illogical but bizarre to remain concerned about edicts that no longer exist.

The initial order should not even be issued if there is any sense of fairness and a real desire for the betterment of the society. As for the editor reply, I understand the art of Kow Tow, it ingrains in this culture.

As it's your first comment, my response would be that you're a bigot and probably a racist and you shouldn't waste your time with a second comment.

Hey cybernick, stop picking on the Editor, and start looking for women OUTSIDE the beer bars.. your negative bully attitude ( and hangover ) will then evaporate like the dew on a hot Thai morning.

Don't worry cybernick, you can develop a new improved constitution too, just like Thailand! It will also improve your persistent constipation, so you get 2 for the price of 1. Just think, no more spewing crap!

"Bizarre" you say Ed?

If you want bizarre, take a look at the new interim constitution. That should give you an opportunity to add to more words like that to your collection of journalistic superlatives.

But of tangled sentence construction there Tony, but we think we know what you mean.
