Weapons cleared from Kalim, north of Patong, with 10 men arrested tonight

Guns, Knives, Hatchets: Police on Phuket Start Clearing Weapons From the Holiday Island

Tuesday, November 4, 2014
PHUKET: Guns, knives and hatchets were part of a police haul this evening as officers planned a succession of raids in the hunt for weapons all over Phuket tonight.

A swoop on apartments in Kalim, north of Patong, led to the arrest by officers from Kathu Police Station of 10 men, mostly from Nakhon Si Thammarat and Pattani, who had periodically alarmed other residents by firing shots and apparently enjoying illegal kratom leaves.

In Phuket City, there were two more arrests, with all 10 police stations across Phuket believed to have been told to compete to tally as many illegal weapons as possible.

The order from Phuket Police Commander Major General Pachara Boonyasit follows the road rage shooting murder of a motorcycle taxi driver in Phuket's main street last week.

''I can't understand why there are so many deadly weapons on a holiday island,'' the major general said, urging police to find as many weapons as possible.

Is a Jetski a weapon? They can certainly be deadly in the wrong hands (intentionally or otherwise). 256 of those should be easy to find... they're all registered with the Marine Office ;-) 555

Yes while the in the south Thailand's army distributed 2,700 assault rifles to people to protect themselves. I urge the major general to listen and read about what else happens in Thailand.

Over the years I have lived in Phuket & visited other parts of Thailand, I have seen street vendor stalls openly selling weapons ranging from machetes, through an assortment of knives (such as are illegal in other countries) & martial arts type weapons, whose names I could not begin to state (the sort seen in old Bruce Lee movies). Surely this practice must also be stopped.

2700 assault rifles supplied to civilians in South Thailand?? Is this a joke? There should be a extra 2700 soldiers send to the South to keep peace and order. Now we can wait for the time that next Phuket shooting stories happens with some of these supplied rifles. Some people in the south will sell their rifle for good money to 'Phuket'.

I think it's time they not only focused on bringing quality tourists to Phuket but also quality residents, Thais & foreign.

As I have said before go to any taxi, Tuk Tuk or Motorbike stand (area) unannounced and you'll find a treasure trove of weapons
