Guide to a Phuket Rip-Off, By a Guide: Massage Price Upped 400 Percent

Monday, November 3, 2014
PHUKET: The Chinese guide on the next massage table to a Phuketwan reporter revealed that rip-offs still permeate Phuket's tourism industry and make the Thai holiday island a place for street-wise travellers.

As the guide was being massaged in a Phuket City facility, he and his masseuse chatted about prices. At this parlor, the cost of a massage is 300 baht for one hour.

''When I bring Chinese tourists, I charge them 1200 baht,'' the guide said.

''When I bring in five people or more, the price drops to 250 baht as a discount. But I still charge them 1200 baht.''

Little wonder he could afford the relaxing 300 baht massage.

The Chinese guide works for a company recently accused of leaving Thai tour organisations with debts of thousands of baht, with promises of working through its debts.

Mass deceptions are carried out on tourists visiting Phuket at every opportunity where the language barrier allows the cheaters to get away with it.

Non-English and non-Thai-speaking groups are easy targets.

The conversation between the Chinese guide and his masseuse, recorded by Phuketwan, took place just last week.

Rip-offs are the main reason why the Phuket Tourism and Sport department director, Santi Pawai, is setting out a schedule of acceptable recommended payment levels for Phuket's regular tourist activities.

The list is a warning to all tourists of potential scams. Khun Santi hopes the list, with the help of the Chinese embassy, will soon be published in all key languages.

There are clearly differences in quality between a 300 baht an hour massage at a Phuket City parlor and a 1200 baht massage with all extras at a luxury resort destination.

However, there is no excuse for operators charging 1200 baht for a massage that others are enjoying for just 300 baht. Phuket's competitiveness depends on treating tourists equitably.

It is to be hoped Khun Santi moves on to look at the large commissions still being paid to taxi and tuk-tuk drivers that also undermine Phuket's competitiveness.

Fifteen percent commission is acceptable - 50 percent is extortion.

Standard prices for tourist services on Phuket include:

Day trip from Phuket to Phi Phi including meals and stops at four snorkelling spots, 3500 baht (adult) 2500 baht (child.)

(Snorkellers are not permitted under Thai law to feed bread to the fish.)

You should see how much they charge the tourists when they stop them off at a fruit seller.
About 5 times the normal price.

In Thailand, hotels and tour providers should not give more than 30% discount to agents and online booking websites.

Today hotels and tour providers are chasing customers by offering up to 70% discount on brochure prices; therefore they are killing themselves on long term.

Hotels in Singapore or in Europe give a maximun 10 up to 20% discount and are reluctant to give more.

In Phuket, tour providers selling day tours for tourists for visiting Phi-Phi Islands or Phang-Nga have a brochure price at 3,000 Baht.
Those Phuket tour providers charge for the net prices, to be paid by touts, taxi drivers and local agents, 800 Baht only and those local con people get more than 2,000 Baht profit per customer.

Now, we understand why boat operators with little profit are not able to have well trained staffs and their boats with all required safety equipment.

Ministry of Tourism & Sports should make compulsory that discount should not exceeded a maximum of 30% of brochure prices and that action will push hotels, tour operators, tour providers and boat operators to give better prices to customers and eliminate the touts and greedy opportunists who are roaming Phuket and destroying its image abroad.

The big problem is a lot of tourists don't realise they are being ripped off. They put their trust in a guide that they expect to do the right thing by them.

After taking their cash the guide will still have his hand out trying to shame them into a tip at the end of the day as well. Pure unadulterated greed.

Phi Phi 3,500 baht!!!
Maybe what is printed on the brochure! The average contract price is 1,000-1,200 baht, some companies have net rates as low as 800 baht!
This is exactly why the boats are rammed full and safety, equipment, etc. is an afterthought.
There are actually very few quality Phi Phi tours, even those have nets in the low 2,000 range. Well above a 15% commission!

Quite a clever deception as there are so many massage parlours showing their prices I am surprised even being in a coach for so much of their tour that the Chinese do not realise the true price?

Don't forget the extra kick back to the representative on top of the commission if you want bigger travel agents to sell your tour.

When I lived in Hawaii and worked the tourist trade.
It was common for tourist spots to kickback drivers and guides etc...but there was never any bumping of the prices...all rates were the same..

Even if the agents and hotels make aggrements with companies at XX% still you find its who is paying the best under the table payment to the representatives selling the trips in the hotel lobbies etc

Hotel lobby agencies have to be registered these days, Michael. If you know of one that's not, best report it.

Perhaps PW could find out the name of some the "nameless" shopping & massage spots where Chinese buses are stopped everyday, and give us some updates?

On the road 4010 from Chao Fah Tawan Tok, (with a Honda on the corner) to Prince Songkla University, you can find at least 4 to 5 different "nameless" buildings with several Tourist buses parked on their parking area. I have never seen any other nationalities except than Chinese there.

I tried to enter once but rejected.

Would be good to know what is going on inside?

We've been inside and reported on what we found. Want to buy a latex mattress? Want to see a snake show? This is where you should go.

Brochures/ flyers/ notices giving average prices tourists should expect to pay for something is simply avoiding addressing the cause of the problem. Typical approach from officialdom. The problem is the seller (agent/ tour guide) - simple to identify them and then approach them. Too difficult for the relevant authority to do? It appears so, sadly, preferring to avoid dealing with the problem and put the onus on the tourist through a few flimsy brochures/ flyers/ notices.

Duncan:

You are correct. The problem is the agent/seller.
But not always easy to identify them. I know one of these guys (Chinese) who is selling the tours from his toabao.com account.

All money goes to his "Bank of China" or ICBC accounts and then he issues the tickets/vouchers from his home-office in Chalong.
