The Pakistani woman, 27, had argued with her American husband Altamash Jamal Mir, 39, earlier in the night with Mr Mir moving to a separate room, according to a police investigator.
Lieutenant Santi Prakobkan, of Tatchatchai Police Station, said he believed the couple rowed over the woman's connection with a former boyfriend via Facebook.
Staff at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa found the woman sitting, crying by the swimming pool about 2.30am today.
''It is believed she had made a rudimentary attempt to slash her wrists,'' Lt Santi said. ''The staff urged her to go inside because rain was falling, then when she refused to move, took an umbrella out to put over her head.
''The staffer went to look for the woman's husband.''
At 4.15am, the woman was found floating in the pool.
An initial medical examination by doctors at Thalang Hospital indicated that thewoman drowned, the lieutenant said.
It is believed arrangements are being made for her body to be flown back to Pakistan.
The name of the former boyfriend has not been disclosed.
*Phuketwan has taken the unusual step of removing the woman's name at the request of her family in Pakistan. We do not share their belief that the manner of the woman's death ''brings disgrace'' on the family. But there are certainly many questions that should be asked of her husband.
Truly it is time for a law to be passed, (or wasn't it already?) to get Thai police to shut up. This kind of conjecture, re "facebook boyfriend" on an extremely personal matter is as gross a violation of privacy as it gets.

All needless deaths deserve explanations, TNM. Bizarre laws that put privacy above public interest have fortunately yet to be imposed in transparent Thailand.
