PHUKET: About 50 family and friends staged a placard-waving protest outside a Phuket hospital yesterday after a Patong taxi driver lost his wife and first son in childbirth.
The anguished father, Nampon Inthawong, 42, said he had heard nothing from Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City, the island's largest public hospital, since the death of his wife on May 2 was followed by the death of the boy from complications two days later.
Khun Nampon came seeking support and clarification and the bodies of his family for cremation.
''I have lost my wife and child,'' he said. ''I want others to know what happened so this tragedy can be avoided in future.''
The doctor performing the delivery encountered unexpected problems and was unable to save Porntip Booddeeksam, 37, a hospital spokesperson said. The boy was delivered by caesarian section but died two days later after breathing in fluids.
Khun Nampon and his mother-in-law were given the body of the boy for cremation and told that the hospital needed to keep Khun Porntip's body until the results of tests on tissue samples sent to the Police Hospital in Bangkok were revealed.
A hospital spokesperson said: ''Doctors do not want these things to happen. Unfortunately in this case, unexpected health issues emerged during the birth.''
Staff from the hospital will form a committee on Monday to examine the case so the lessons can be applied in future.
Khun Porntip had two children from a previous marriage. A three-day ceremony will be held from today for the two-day-old boy at a Patong temple, then his body will be cremated.
