The scene at the fatal crash north of Phuket as bodies are removed

Greater Phuket Horror Crash: Four Young Swedes, Thai Man Killed, Truck Driver Flees Collision Scene

Wednesday, February 1, 2012
PHUKET: Four young Swedes and their Thai driver were killed today in a shocking high-speed crash north of Phuket, Phuketwan has confirmed.

The car collided with a six-wheel truck and the driver of the truck fled the scene. The Swedes - two men and two women - were all aged 21 or 22 and described as students.

All five of the people in the car were killed instantly. The impact was so great that it took rescuers almost three hours to cut the bodies free from the wreck of the saloon.

Photographs published on a Thai news site show wreckage across the roadway and the bodies in the car, pixillated out.

Later, as the occupants are freed, the number of bodybags on the road grows from one, to two to three . . .

The fatal crash came about 7am today not far from the Khok Kloi junction, where the main road north from Phuket through the province of Phang Nga splits into a coastal road towards Khao Lak and an inland road to Phang Nga Town and Krabi.

The bodies are now in Vachira Phuket Hospital. Police have named the victims as Johan Olof Nikolas Svensson, 22, Frida Madeleine Falk, 22, Anders Tobias Larsson, 22, and Elin Marita Hedbris, 21.

The dead driver is Wichit Phromluang, 26, from Udonthani province.

It is believed the four Swedish youngsters had been staying in a guesthouse in Patong, the lively west coast holiday hub on Phuket. They were heading to Chumporn, a quieter province of Thailand noted for its good beaches and diving.

The refrigerator truck, with a large rainbow on the side, is thought to have been carrying a load of fish south. Police are seeking the driver's details from the Chotpatama Company, owners of the truck.

Phang Nga - these days often called a part of ''Greater Phuket'' - has always been a popular destination for Swedes and other Scandinavians who enjoy the natural beauty of the region more than the growing crowds on Phuket.

Love of the natural environment is the reason why Phang Nga has returned to popularity among Swedes, even though most of the 540 Swedish victims of the 2004 tsunami in Thailand died in and around Khao Lak.

This road is perhaps the most dangerous road I have ever had the misfortune to travel. And I have done so many times. I estimate it be safer to drive the Indi 500 circuit against the race flow than try avoid the mad myriad of truck, bus and mini bus drivers who hurtle down this road with no regard for life and limb.

How very tragic. Driving along minding your own beeswax and boom! Taken out of this life in an accident. My deepest condolences to all families concerned.
I thought ending your holiday was filled with happy memories and flying home.
It is not the speed that is the killer, but the lack of driving skills in various sized vehicles. Maybe time to start new licenses for commercial drivers of all vehicles, renewable every year. It would be a start.

I think the drivers who are involved in these accidents, run out of fear the dead persons might come and take him with them? I don't know? If they are drunk they usually sleep it off, then they can't be held on drunk driving charges. Likewise if they have fallen asleep behind the wheel, they go home sleep and then report afterwards. Also most of the commercial drivers are on drugs, ya ba or ya ice and redbull 150 anyway, so they hope the evidence in there P will have long gone before they present at the police station. Police should make a mandatory sentence of one year in jail, guilty or not, if you do a runner.

Thai police should hunt this driver and present him for media. We are terrified by all unnecessary accidents in thailand affecting tourists and others. And we can stay in europe for our holidays. Condolences to the families, i cry for them.

A gross exaggeration by reader "Nip". This road is no more or less dangerous than most in Thailand, excepting those on Phuket island itself where many drivers seem to take leave of their senses.

I have driven this road to Phang Nga many times and have had an enjoyable and relaxing drive.

There are traffic lights where the 402 from Khok Kloi joins route 4, if this is where the accident happened. Until we know more details it is pointless to try to blame anyone, especially a strip of concrete or tarmac.

My deepest sympathies go to all the families in Thailand and Sweden for their loss, that coupled with the hope the police on this island arrest this cowardly killer soon because that is what he is.

Nip, you have never been to Nepal then..... Kathmandu to Pokhara. Try it, just once... However, back to the point. That junction is dangerous and I hope they find the driver. He should be punished severely. My heart goes out to the you Swedish guys and girls. And the Thai driver. R.I.P.

The traffic signal of the intersection at the bus station is set to flashing red at night up until about 7:00 a.m. Which should indicate a 4 way stop, like a stop sign. But many Thai drivers believe "the signal is broken" and they fly through the intersection going toward Krabi. I live nearby and have observed this many times, so I asked, what does a flashing red light mean to you? Both educated and uneducated Thais told me, "it means the signal is broken, so you don't have to stop." I pray God will comfort the families of the victims of this horrible tragedy and people will begin to stop at this intersection.

Editor Comment:

What you say about the intersection is true but there's no indication that there was any connection between the intersection and the crash.

RIP, Vila i frid

This is an excellent dual lane road, been driving it more than 100 times, and its hard to say what caused the accident until more details are revealed. I noticed its a private car, no legal taxi, with driver from Isarn. Please don't blame the truck driver for making a runner, its common to find money for bail until you present yourself for Police, which must be done within 24 hours

I remember when I took a mini van from Krabi back to Phuket that driver was crazy overtaking cars on the other side of the road at the base of hill not knowing if their was an on-coming vehicle. My thoughts go out to the families who have lost their loved ones

Dana said: "Both educated and uneducated Thais told me, 'it means the signal is broken, so you don't have to stop.' "

Nonsense. Most Thais know it means you can go only if nothing else is coming.

Flashing orange means the same, but you have priority over flashing red.

I think ALL the Thais Dana spoke to were having a laugh at Dana's expense.
