GrabTaxi gets the jump on rivals on Phuket by linking to regulations

GrabTaxi Meter Cabs Get Green Light for Phuket's New Parking Spots

Thursday, August 6, 2015
PHUKET: GrabTaxi metered cabs are to be given preference for parking at the 10 spots set aside for taxis around Phuket, it was announced today.

Governor Nisit Jansomwong told a meeting with the media that 103 of the holiday island's 370 meter taxi drivers had chosen to sign on for the application service.

''In my 10 or 11 months in this role on Phuket, I haven't seen any publicly available vehicles used to support tourism,'' he said.

''This new arrangement should be a breakthrough.''

GrabTaxi has established a presence in Bangkok by aligning itself with regulators. The rival Uber service, which also has a presence on Phuket, tends to operate without alignment with regulators.

Meter taxi drivers were being taught how to use the GrabTaxi system at a seminar at the Land Transport Offices in Phuket City today.

Non-meter limousines and saloon cars must have meters fitted before they can join the GrabTaxi system.

With preference being given to GrabTaxi, it's seen as another reason to expect the number of meter taxis to grow rapidly now on Phuket.

Officials at the Land Transport Office said today that some of the 10 parking areas designated for meter taxis had already been marked and were in operation.

''All of them should be operating by the end of next week,'' he said.

The 10 parking spots where taxis will await calls for customers are:

.. Phuket bus terminals one and two in Phuket City

.. Provincial Hall, Phuket City

.. The Public Transport Offices in Saphan Hin, Phuket City

.. Patong Hospital

.. Loma Park football field in Patong

.. Chalong Police Station

.. Karon Police Station

.. Phuket City Police Station

.. Rajabhat University

Governor Nisit was speaking today at his regular monthly Meet the Media conference at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City.

ED the listed places are missing one place, I count only nine places. I have also seen these taxis waiting at Heroiness Monument.

That's two, Duncan.

Meter cabs may park where they wish, as long as it's a legal parking spot.

I've tried on several occasions to use Grab Taxi in Bangkok.
Each time failed to arrive or allow me to book.

This won't change anything in Phuket for prices.

If you hail a Phuket cab today and there are no fare rises, the price should seem a whole lot more reasonable in 20 years, Tbs.

Thanks Ed. I also meant that the Grab Taxi's wait at Heroiness Monument as well as the 10 allocated spots on the island. As I write, there is a car not even 50 meters from my front gate.
I use these taxis exclusively in Singapore, always honest and very reliable and trackable on your smartphone. They have special deals and special rates on their promotion days.

I wonder at what rate the meter runs on these taxis. As of now, the current meters are rigged to charge 3 to 4x more than in BKK.

Obviously this is far more than the legal maximum but it seems to be an issue nobody cares to tackle.

When the metered taxis first appeared on Phuket, a ride from the airport to my home was about Bt 320. Now it's close to Bt 1000.

The public wanted metered taxis so the authorities gave them just that, albeit with 3x the previous rate.

Problem solved ?

I don't think so.

It does not matter much how the fare is calculated if at the end the customers are still charged rip-off rates.

This is something that has changed, but for the worse. Taxi rides have only become more expensive in the past 3 years.

The authorities have overlooked the complaints by tourists. While the taxis on Phuket are better managed now than previously, the fares - the thing most tourists complain about - have gone higher. Hard to figure.

On August 6th it was reported "Officials at the Land Transport Office said today that some of the 10 parking areas designated for meter taxis had already been marked and were in operation. All of them should be operating by the end of next week"

The taxi stand at Karon Police Station, (in the heart of the KT beach transport monopoly) was never established. I wonder how many of the other nine "parking spots where taxis will await calls for customers were quietly forgotten. (Nine?)
