THE GOVERNOR of Phuket, Niran Kulayanimid, celebrated his 53rd birthday on Friday with the help of many community groups and members of the administration team.
Local media turned out in force. But there was one special visitor, more important than them all: his mother.
The governor is almost an islander these days. He has been on Phuket for seven years, two years in the leading role and five years before that as vice governor.
It was definitely Governor Niran's lucky day.
The 3pm lottery, drawn today because of yesterday's public holiday, came up with lucky number 62 for the governor -- the same number as his car licence plate.
Nine monks prayed with the governor today at his home. Alms were given to the monks.
Then came a steady procession of well-wishers, including representatives from the Lions' Club, Red Cross, Bangkok Phuket Hospital, SIPA and the Thai Hotels Association. There were plenty of other visitors, too.
Officials from Immigration, the Tourist Police, the Highways Department, Amphur authorities and many others joined the growing throng.
