PHUKET: A German couple were extricated from thick jungle early today after becoming lost in a Phuket nature park. The woman had to be carried out and was admitted to hospital with a foot wound.
Kathrin Strempel, 49, jabbed her foot on a sharp bamboo spike as she and Jurgen Strempel, 51, tried to find their way out of the Khao Phra Taew national park surrounding Phuket's popular Bang Pae waterfall.
The couple went for a hike about 4pm and called the Tourist Police emergency 1155 hotline about 8.50pm, officials said. At that stage, according to the telephone call, they were close to ''Sign No. 11.''
Tourist Police combined with park staff and searched in two groups, eventually locating the couple after they lit a fire for guidance. The couple were brought out at 1.50am after Kusoldharm Foundation volunteers treated Kathrin Stempel.
She was admitted to Phuket international Hospital in Phuket City.

They might have been desperate for help, but it was pretty stupid lighting a fire in a National Park at this time of the year - especially since they had a working mobile phone with them.
