Fresh Shake Reinforces Request for Tsunami Tower on Island off Phuket

Saturday, May 9, 2015
PHUKET: A tremor of magnitude 2.7 shook the Phuket region tonight, driving home a request by the residents of Koh Yao for a tsunami warning tower.

Island locals passed on the request for a tsunami warning tower to the Governor of Phang Nga, Prayoon Rattanasenee, when he visited he visited Koh Yao today.

Then at 6.15pm came the latest earthquake, 10 kilometres deep at latitude 7.81 longitude 98.52.

Because the quaking fault line is just five kilometres from the island, Koh Yao needs its own tower, the residents said.

''We can feel the shakes and see what's happening during the day but tremors at night are more of a concern,'' a local told the governor.

Today's minor tremor is the latest in a lengthening list of shakes that briefly gave some Phuket people the jitters earlier this week when the first earthquake early on Wednesday was followed by a couple more.

The larger quakes have been felt on Phuket, Krabi, and on mainland Phang Nga. Although close to Phuket, Koh Yao is part of Phang Nga.

The only working and the proper one - tsunami tower I have seen at "The Racha" resort at Racha Yai is.
With last minutes rates as high as 14,000THB in June for beach beachfront, one may expect that they care about patrons - so they do.

But in Phang Nga a tsunami tower&station, once built after tsunami, is ready for final round of brick removals.

Sorry Phil, the views of idiots are not wanted.

Don't the tsunami towers only respond if they get a signal from the tsunami sea watch buoy? The sea watch buoy in the Andaman sea is defunct and not worth it's price in scrap metal. It has been destroyed by the fishing boats anchoring to it. Until it is fixed or replaced, there will no warning of a tsunami in this region, until we see the sea rising up. Maintenance is another word that is not high on the list of things to do.

Is that true? We've read no reports lately of problems with the relaunched tsunami buoy.

@ Ed. Not to quote anybody, but the two Italian made buoys are being replaced by two USA made buoys for 76 million baht. The NDWC deployed the two Italian-made buoys into the sea several years ago. They fed information to the centre under a four-year contract.
After the contract expired, no one came up with a budget to renew it, due to the political turmoil.
The centre plans to replace them with two US-made buoys, using 76 million baht in the 2016 financial year. ( 2016, what about now when we need them?). I am glad I don't live near the coast, as the next wave is not too far off in the future.

I think you'll find the US buoys are already in place. Ridiculous to be scared or to try to scare others, Duncan B. If I were you, I'd behave more responsibly.

NDWC stands for what, No Don't Warn Customers?
