Five Brought to Safely After Distress Call in Krabi Storm

Monday, May 25, 2015
PHUKET: Rescuers put to sea early today to aid five tourists caught in storm-tossed seas on a longtail boat off the province of Krabi.

The tourists, four men and a woman from Trang province, had hired the longtail for a fishing trip but the motor conked out. They called for help about 1.20am today off Koh Lanta.

Rescuers managed to bring them in safely despite the stormy weather.

These tourists seems to be semi-local , so should understand the sea, but still - Mai pen rai attitude toward apparent risks.

I have seen that on FB ads by one reputable Southern travel agency advertising also in low season day trips to Emerald Cave at Koh Muk - AFAIK no trips during low season should go , apparently not because of rain, but because of choppy sea conditions, which are , on top, are unpredictable - you can't predict sea condition during the trip and they tend to change rapidly if during green season.
They responded to my concern - Oh please, we simply don't leave if we see in the morning bad weather ...
- I think they are processing tens of thousands customers per year.

Appr. one year ago during a storm in Andaman sea, I met in a cafe two girls traveling alone - a kind of daughters of tycoons, one from Central Europe, second from India - they were concerned how to get to Krabi at such weather . We discussed various options - starting from regular ferry, speedboat , bus, car, helicopter, private plane, or scheduled plane via BKK or Samui - in the end their hotel - Ritz Carlton Krabi - decided to send next weather for them a speedboat - fortunately they arrived well - but weather was a kind of all small boats are requested to stay ashore ... - another too risky enterprise , could simply go wrong at such kind of weather very easy, no real concern for safety.

I would really like to know How do they call for help from the middle of the Ocean in a small boat! I understand larger ships have expensive wireless systems!
