The two men who posed as monks will face serious charges of deception

Fake Monks Stripped of Saffron Robes in Patong After Deceiving Merit Makers

Thursday, November 20, 2014
PHUKET: Two men who pretended to be monks have been arrested by police on Phuket and will face charges of deception and extortion.

Officers were called to a 7-Eleven in Patong's Sainamyen Road where the saffron-robed pair were collecting money. The pair told residents they'd been doing the same thing in Hua Hin.

But suspicious Patong people called in officers who discovered the pair had collected 2780 baht yesterday under false pretenses.

A check of their documentation showed that the men - Manit Keawsen, 33, and Sod Namjaidee, 49 - had amassed 35,200 baht in the space of a single week.

At Kathu Police Station the saffron robes the men had been wearing were removed and stiff penalties are likely to be imposed.
