Evidence of blatant pollution: the captain and the engineer face charges

Facebook Activist Snares Phuket Boat That Leaked Fuel Into National Park

Friday, May 1, 2015
PHUKET: The captain and engineer of a tour cruise vessel that operates between Phuket and Phi Phi have been charged with environmental breaches following incriminating photographs published on Facebook.

The photos were posted by activist Dr Thon Thamrongnawasawat who noted: ''This happened on April 30 at 3pm, the tour boat was anchored on the right side of Ao Ton Sai. It is hard to miss, please investigate."

Marine Police from Krabi province and rangers from Phi Phi's Nopprat Thara Marine National Park quickly responded and the captain and the engineer admitted discharging the fuel into the sea unintentionally from the Sea Angel 5, which is operated by Nikorn Marine from Phuket.

Although the fuel was said to have dissipated by today, inevitably it will kill some marine life.

Dr Thon has proven that speaking up and capturing evidence can make a difference when outrageous breaches of the law are occurring with little concern for the future of the Andaman region's marine life. He is the early leader in the competition for the Phuketwan Environmental Excellence Award for 2015.

1000THB fine or warning, I suppose.

And no charge for a damage of environment , taht could be very steep, in the most of developed countries - it is usually charghed by a statutory formula, regardless whether state spend money on the accident.

And referring to these clowns as a "Captain" and an "Engineer"... Spare me... these are just like taxi or tuktuk drivers.

Clearly the leak was caused by brake failure so no punishment required.

Try to do this crime in a usa harbor or in The Port of Rotterdam. Fines are about 100,000 dollars + clean up expenses. Must be paid before the vessel get a clearance to leave the port. Thailand still has a long way to go when it comes to environmental issues.

Their wrists will get slapped, and they might have to get 5 bills of 100 baht out of their wallets.
