Phuket Hulks have little to look forward to at an empty ground

Disgraced FC Phuket Fans Banned from Club's Last Home Match

Tuesday, December 27, 2011
PHUKET: The island's ailing football club, FC Phuket, is to suffer the ignominy of having fans banned from its final home match in Phuket City because of disgraceful behavior.

The club, with its finances and its future as up in the air as a corner kick, also has to pay a 20,000 baht fine.

On December 21, Phuket fans at Surakul Stadium in Phuket City blocked all exits and forced the referee who oversaw a 1-0 loss to lowly Suphanburi FC to apologise over a microphone before he was allowed to leave the pitch.

It was the second appalling incident of Phuket's first season in Division One. In May, the Phuket Hulk fans chanted at the team coach and forced him to resign on the pitch.

The lack of sportsmanship shown by Phuket fans is likely to discourage any potential backer from taking on the club.

While women and children turned out in numbers in Phuket City when FC Phuket was doing well, they are hardly likely to turn up to support the Hulks if the air is filled with bottles and other missiles, as it was last Wednesday.

To have the fans unable to watch their team's last match of the season is the most serious penalty the Thai FA can impose, short of suspending the club. Whether the fans get the message is a concern - some journalists have actually defended their shoddy behavior.

The bottom line is that no investor will back a football club that has a reputation for intimidation and unacceptable bad behavior, on or off the pitch, by players or fans.

With FC Phuket's prime finacial supporter, the Phuket Provinicial Administrative Organisation, forced to cease funding the club earlier this month on a ruling by the Auditor-General, the club needs money and a change in attitude by fans to survive.

Phuketwan understands that none of the current players or the club's staff have had their contracts renewed for next season. FC Phuket plays one more away game before the ignominy of playing to an empty stadium on January 7.

While you kind of read this story and shake your head in despair, the most disappointing thing is that it doesn't come as a surprise. Mob rule, blockades, disregard for normal rules and behavior, financial chaos etc - it's all par for the course in these parts, sadly.

Bye Bye Babies. You loose in all respects. This place is without rules nor law, you loose. Watch TV instead, there must be a good soap opera on.

On friday the 7th Jan I will go to watch FC Phuket play their last home game of the season. I encourage others to do the same to support a team of outstanding individuals.

Stay in Thailand long enough and you realise this is a country where anything is possible. Whereas the western world is on its knees because of misguided desire. The Thai people are an example to all of kindness, friendship and genuine family values. There will be an FC Phuket for years to come. The 7th Jan is an opportunity for the people of Phuket to express these virtues and cheer on their team. Who is going to stop - nobody.

Better if you went on Saturday January 7, but you will be stopped from entering at the gate.

Kindness, friendship and genuine family values? I was at that game. Bottles of water and cans of beer came sailing over our heads onto the pitch. I wouldn't have liked to have my children with me at the time. This kind of behaviour needs stamping out and playing games behind closed doors might make the fans realise that their bad behaviour is costing the club. Yes, there were frustrating decisions on the night - but that happens all the time in football. Making the ref apologise - twice - is beyond a joke. Phuket FC were lucky to get just a 20k fine and one game behind closed doors. Many other countries would be looking at much harsher bans including dismantling the club or playing a season behind closed doors. Phuket FC fans need to wake up and see the damage they are doing.

I appreciate your sarcasm, not the point of my contribution as you well know.

Sarcasm is all about intonation, and really only detectable in conversation.
