Thailand's fishing industry has been yellow-carded by the EU

Disappointment Marks Thailand's Reaction to EU Decision to Issue Yellow Card

Tuesday, April 21, 2015
PHUKET: On 21 April 2015, the European Union (EU) issued a yellow card to Thailand.

Although the yellow card does not introduce trade sanctions on European imports of Thai fishery products, it has been a source of grave discouragement that the EU chose to ignore the very earnest efforts of the past six months by the Royal Thai Government in addressing all issues which once were deemed the causes of IUU fishing.

Thailand is deeply disappointed at the EU's decision.

The Royal Thai Government is now firmly seizing the issue. It matches words with deeds by structural changes, law amendments and passage of new laws, prosecution, and preventive measures as major instruments.

More importantly, the EU's decision reflects its failure to recognise the longstanding cooperation between Thailand and the EU's competent authorities.

Thailand calls on the EU to take into account Thailand's substantial and tangible progress in combating IUU fishing.

The EU's assessment must be transparent, fair, non-discriminatory, and based on accurate facts and latest developments.

Thailand will continue to cooperate with the EU to combat IUU activities and promote sustainable fishing.

In light of the progress made and the Thai government's genuine intention, Thailand urges the EU to remove the yellow card at the earliest opportunity.

The Royal Thai Government takes allegations of IUU fishing very seriously, and has done so for years.

Efforts to tackle illegal fishing and improve the sustainable management of marine and aquaculture environment are a top political priority.

These efforts will continue and are led by Thai officials at the highest levels of government.

Words won't cut it anymore. World bodies realize that Thailand is all talk, no action.

Intentions don't get the job done.
It's a Yellow Card, meaning they have another few months to correct their failings.

While tackling illegal fishing and improving the sustainable management of marine and aquaculture environment are a "top political priority"... essentially nothing is getting down to the ignorant fishermen that will pilfer any and all species of fish possible. Just walk along the streets from Bangla to Kamala to Rawai, and you will see anything and everything that gets caught in their nets.

Like everything else in Thailand...lip service reigns supreme...and action is non-existent. I seriously don't think that Thai officials at the highest levels of government understand how to govern and to manage anything other than their own incomes, wherever they may come from or be augmented by.

Thailand is deeply disappointed that thai talks/waving with papers in front of cameras not longer works with foreign institutions who long time were thinking that Thailand was serious working to handle the matters as Thailand promised but it did not.. It is the same story as with coming airline ban.
International 'needle' now pinch the thai bubble. That will go to hurt Thailand a bit in order to learn/experience/handle correctly international laws and regulations. That is different cake compared with a simple beach chair/umbrella happening.

With the strong warning from EU to ban all seafood products from Thailand, the Department of National Parks Wildlife and Conservation has a good excuse to reinforce the law by cracking down illegal fishing by poachers inside Marine National Parks in Thailand especially on the Andaman Sea.
By protecting fish and coral reefs, Thailand will get more friendly eco-tourist divers from around the world.

Time to NCPO to use Section 44 to ban trawlers and arrest poachers fishing illegally in Marine National Parks in Thailand as well to limit to a minimum size for all fish, crabs, squids, shrimps, lobsters, shellfish and ban shark fishing at any cost.

Upon reading the Government statement I had to double check it was not April Fools Day all over again.

So they are deeply disappointed that their smoke and mirrors show has not fooled the EU.

Boo hoo hoo.

I hope the US would follow suit.

Come on Thailand - wake up - you can be much better than that if you try (or want).

Totally agree with all the other comments. Trying to get sympathy over a longstanding cooperation is ridiculous. The EU must be fed up of the longstanding inactivity of Thailand. At some point they will have to face the fact and stop enabling Thailand.
