DENMARK took the King's Cup in a thriller of a match tonight against Thailand at Surakul Stadium on Phuket, winning 2-2 on penalties, after one saved penalty shot was disallowed.
The match before a full house had just about everything, with goals coming at 35 minutes in the first half (Denmark) and the 21 minute mark of the second half (Thailand) and again at 35 minutes (Thailand) and 44 minutes (Denmark).
See-saw is an understatement. A large crowd of mostly Thais and a small number of noisy Danes had the time of their lives.
The Danish team coped with the heat and the Thais coped with the Danes.
The first half was a build-up with the Danes scoring after 35 minutes.
In a second half that produced fantastic football, the Thais came back with a goal after 21minutes. Then, when they scored again after 35 minutes, it looked as though a second consecutive King's Cup belonged to the home side.
But the Danes scored at the 44 minute mark, earning a penalty shootout. One of the shots was saved by the Danish keeper, then a penalty save was disallowed by the referee.
A couple of kicks later, and the Cup belonged to the Danes.
The match was played at a high level but with none of the physical brawls on the Thailand-Lebanon game, although there were plenty of mental ones, plus yellow cards galore.
Such was the intensity that two players were stretchered off.
