Firemen battle the blaze at the Chinese temple on Phuket today

Crackers Spark Phuket Chinese Temple Blaze: Photo Special

Monday, August 11, 2014
PHUKET: Thousands of firecrackers exploded during a blaze at a Chinese temple on Phuket today, bringing locals at the run to try to douse the storeroom fire.

The blaze broke out about 8am and brought six fire trucks to the Ya Nang Chinese temple in Krabi Road, not far from the Blue Elephant restaurant.

Firemen too an hour to control the blaze and were mopping up as temple authorities assessed the cost of the damage.

The blaze was fueled by the exploding crackers and the ceremonial paper burned during events at the temple.

It's expected stores of firecrackers will be renewed in time for this year's Phuket Vegetarian festival in late September.

Gotta chuckle at the Headlines and Cut-lines of your newspaper. This time the "crackers" grabbed me as I wondered what kind of "crackers" would spark a "Temple Blaze." Crackers by Western definition are a "food" somewhat like a plain cookie but usually unsweetened and consumed as snack food or with a "dip" or cheeses, or soups. "Cracker" is also used as a negative or derogatory slang expression to define White American Rednecks in the South and by many other Blacks throughout the USA. I misunderstood and figured some hick from the States set the temple afire rolling dope joints with the ceremonial "papers." Thanks for all the WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN info. Enjoy reading with my Chai, kippers, and crackers!!!

Editor Comment:

In other parts of the English-speaking world, the use of ''crackers'' as a shortened form for ''firecrackers'' is more widely understood. A person can also be driven ''crackers,'' meaning mad, or crazy.
