MORE COUNTDOWN clocks are needed to continue Phuket's improving road toll record, a senior traffic police officer has told Phuketwan.
Asked to nominate areas of Phuket that remained dangerous for driving, the Deputy Commander, Chief of Traffic Centre, Police General Chalit Thintanee named the entire length of Thepkrassatri Road and the sharp bend in Kathu on the road between the Tesco-Lotus intersection and the Loch Palm-Caltex intersection.
A total of 16 people died on Phuket's roads in January 2009, which was up on the nine deaths in the same month in 2008.
Last year saw a remarkable fall in the number of deaths on the roads - from 201 in 2007 to 136 in 2008.
''We are achieving more, saving more lives,'' General Chalit said.
''The Highways Department has the budget for more countdown clocks. We also need the budget to resurface some dangerous sections of roads.''
In January, police answered 174 accident calls. They recorded 155 people injured, 11 seriously.
The sharp corner in Kathu, known as the Chalaykeree corner, is to have warning signs placed on both sides by the Tessaban council so that drivers who do not know it as well as locals also treat it with great caution.
