Going, going garland: Are Phuket's street flower sellers on the nose?

Cornered, Phuket's Garland Sellers May Be Losing Their Bloom

Thursday, January 12, 2012
PHUKET: Flower garland sellers at Phuket's street corners should go, new Phuket Vice Governor Dr Sommai Preechasin said this week when all of Phuket's municipalities met.

The regular monthly meeting heard Dr Sommai express the view that the deodorant garland-sellers created a bad image of Phuket for tourists, causing distractions that could lead to drivers taking their attention off the roads.

''The image is not good and it's certainly possible that crashes could be caused,'' she said.

Reaction was mixed. Vichit Council said they'd already begun moving to clear the roads of garland-sellers but other councils say it's not a particular problem.

The sellers are usually very old or very young, people who may find it difficult to make money in other ways.

In some Western countries, people down on their luck have traditionally cleaned windscreens. In Asian countries where poverty and gridlock are rife, hordes of vendors descend on motorists who stop at intersections to sell food, newspapers, cigarettes and other goods.

Complaints in the past have been about the chemicals that are sometimes used to keep the flowers fresh for as long as possible.

The street sellers seem to some to be a last link with Phuket's poorer past.

Of all the possible traffic related problems Phuket suffers from, the new Vice Governor decides to tackle this totally irrelevant issue for the sake of improving image.

When we have authorities in the highest places on Phuket with priorities like this, is it any wonder nothing seems to get resolved.

How about having a public hearing where local residents, both Thai and foreign, can table their concerns for you to consider, Dr Sommai?

Now that might highlight some REAL problems you could tackle and leave the poor flower sellers alone.

Formalin is a known human carcinogen. Yes it causes cancer of the lungs and throat when breathed in. Formaldehyde is highly toxic to all animals, regardless of method of intake. Go on, buy those flowers.

I'm with Steve C here.
how on earth is this a problem?
I could list 10 problems a lot more critical than this without even thinking.

Priorities.... anyone in Phuket have any?

These people are public enemy #1 for traffic issues? At least they are working and not really causing any problems and do not create, IMHO, a bad image of Phuket. Has the Vice Governor talked to Phuketwan or another media outlet to find out what tourists/expats are saying?

If this is the top priority of the VG's office then Phuket people may as well give up on improving the place. There are plenty of other issues which need to be seriously looked at.

Flower garland sellers are not creating a bad image - far from it - please leave them alone Vice Governor and make better use of your time dealing with problems that need to be urgently addressed - I think you know what they are - if not read the back issues of Phuketwan!

Vice Governor, I ask you to look at the much bigger issues that give Phuket a bad name internationally. It is not the flower sellers, it is the blatant disregard for the laws of this country, the inability nor willingness of the police to go after lawbreakers, the scams, the rip-offs, the tourist beatings by tuk tuk drivers, taxi drivers and now night club staff. The corruption and lack of responsibility for everyone's safety etc. THESE are the reasons Phuket and Thailand are falling off the tourists want to visit lists. Sit up please and deal with these and other very BIG issues, and leave the flower sellers alone.

Dr Sommai, if you really want to clean up the image of Phuket, start by:

1. Removing the very young children from roaming the bars at night.

2. Sort out the Tuk-Tuks

3. Sort out the Parking problems in Patong

4. Sort out the number of illegal taxis

5. Sort out the Jet-skis

6. Sort our other forms of tourist scams

I guess it's easy to pick on the flower sellers because these are not backed by powerful individuals and run m****
style.

Vice Governor, I ask you to look at the much bigger issues that give Phuket a bad name internationally. If the Flower garland sellers is a big problem - what about the beggars sitting around inside the "weekend market"? Lots of tourists on that market.

#Dun. May I suggest you refer your comment to the women that use hairspray, hair coloring or hair straightener as these products contain formaldehyde.
Generally speaking Thai women appear to use more makeup than others and are oblivious to the dangers of Thiomersal (Mascara), DBP (nail polish) and Parabens and synthetic fragrances used in general cosmetics, not to mention eyelash glue.
The garland sellers are not as toxic as some of the women around you!
