Sixty-four-year-old Charat Rattanarat was under arrest at Phuket's Kathu Police Station today after telling officers about his deadly encounter in the dark with two rooster thieves.
For a long time, Khun Charat, who for 10 years has patrolled and protected a rubber plantation off Phrabaramee Soi 7 in Patong, wondered where the roosters had been going.
A breeder of cockfighting birds, Khun Charat wondered whether a cunning snake was taking roosters, chickens and eggs from his chickenhouse among the rubber trees.
Last night, the third night he had waited in the scrub to see what was happening, he found out.
Two young men went into the chicken house about 11pm and emerged with a rooster, Khun Charat told police.
''I had my scythe and I yelled out: 'Give my chick back!'
''Instead of dropping the bird, one of the young men pulled out as long knife. He threatened me and we fought.''
Police believe Werawat Tergnoi, 21, died from two cuts to his throat. The other man fled.
Khun Charat told his wife what had happened, then contacted the owner of the plantation before going to Kathu Police Station and surrendering.
It is likely that police will accept his claim of self-defence.
Turned out too be a real fight and not between animals.

If you think humans are in a class of their own, yes. But we are animals, too. Some people forget.
