PHUKET: A clash between two vessels off Phuket failed to ignite an international dispute yesterday when a Frenchman offered to pay for the damage.
Onlookers feared the worst when an Indonesian-registered craft with a distinctive shape crashed into a Thai fishing boat off Ya Nui in southern Phuket about 3pm.
There could have been harsh words and recriminations but the captain of the unusual vessel, Dominique Gerardin, quickly offered to pay all costs.
On board the Lamima were 18 holidaymakers.
The man in charge of the fishing boat, Job Patrakchom, accepted the offer of compensation.
He and his crew of seven, who had left port on Thursday, resumed their voyage.
Marine Police were pleased their role was restricted to mediation.
