China Boosts Thailand to Record Levels in 'Excellent' Tourism Recovery

Thursday, March 19, 2015
PHUKET: Thailand's visitor arrivals surged to a record total of 2,654,634 in January 2015, up by 16.30 percent over January 2014, according to figures published by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

This was largely due to a major comeback by all the markets in Asia and the Asean region, including the top performers of China, Malaysia, Korea Japan, and India.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said: ''This is a clear indication that all our tourism revival strategies have produced excellent results.

''It is an excellent start to 2015, and we are hoping to maintain the arrivals all through the year.

''Again, I wish to stress that this is the result of all the hard work exerted by the entire industry, including Thai Airways International, all the airlines flying to Thailand, Airports of Thailand, Immigration Bureau, and the entire private sector including the MICE industry, hotels, tour operators, and guides.

''All of them deserve credit for this turnaround from what was a difficult and challenging year in 2014.''

Here is a summary of the key results:

Any agency that collects and reports the statistics by which it measures it's own success has very limited credibility in my eyes. a clear conflict of interest.

Thai Airways is reporting record losses and slashing fares across the board. Anyone traveling though Thai airports can see how quiet it is compared to regular high season traffic.

All my friends and acquaintances running businesses here on Phuket bemoan the worst high season since the Tsunami.

It would seem that these extra tourists do not use airports, hotels or restaurants. Otherwise these numbers are very difficult to believe.

Editor Comment:

When the market segments change, herbert, so quite often do the beneficiaries. If a guesthouse loses its European customers, it would be unusual to find those beds suddenly filled with Chinese.

So easy to blame the decline of Europeans on the economics and not on the Mippets running the show over here. Anyway. Congratulations Thailand for the quality achieved.

The numbers for Chinese are that high, because they don't queue.

decline of Eurooean visitors attributed chiefly to decline from Russia, other countries +/- are stagnant , it doesn't matter whether it is +2% or -3%.

Mr.Arunyik,

Tourists do not come because of but in spite of your "strategies".

I find the tendency questionable and can not imagine that phuket increasingly want to isolate itself.

Where are all the aussies, the scandinavians?

Brits, Germans and US Americans together have the same number as Malaysians and only half of the Chinese!

This should be an excellent result, khun
Arunyik?

Laotians come over by the hundreds every day to do their shopping in Nong Khai,Udon Thani, Mukdahan and Nakhom Phanom. Many also get hospital treatment in Udon or Khon Kaen. As the arrival figure has gone up over 14% one can assume their wealth is increasing. They are certainly not tourists, but rather day trippers.

so the numbers are up. only problem is they all come on chartered tours. All The money stays in China. 7 days in Phuket, walk around take photos and back to hotel. The local Thais that earn their living from tourists spending are starving. Jungceylon in Patong is like a ghost town.
quantity has killed quality

So now Thailand are over run by people from a country that has to educate it's own people how to behave when leaving the communist controlled state and even planes have to be diverted back to Thailand with pictures of an air hostess holding her hands over her eyes as she is in so much distress. Never seen this with Europeans, I think the off Aussie maybe. Really good news! I don't think so. I see this is for Thailand but why is Phuket so quiet, restaurants, bars etc. Hhhhmmm they must not come to Phuket.

Malaysia +92%, China + 57%, Russia -46%

Who stays longer? Russian, Chinese or Malaysian tourists? Russian stay weeks or even months instead of days like the Chinese and the Malaysian

The rising number of Chinese visitors benefit a very small number of tour companies who offer cheap "all in" packages, and in general do nothing to help the local economy. As the Ed quite rightly states, they do not eat in local restaurants or stay in local guesthouses.

Their buses clog the roads and they are the main users of the hated jetskis and parasails.

but hey, if this is seen as successful for Phuket I am thrilled....

While everyone from the tourism authority pats themselves on the back for these supposedly correct stats / numbers.... i wonder how much cash is being spent during their stay... not a lot from the budget charter tourist that make up the bulk of the these numbers. So you have numbers that look wonderful but cash injection to the local economy not so great.

Tourist up 16%, revenue under 8%. I don't worry about scams, because I do not hire jet skies and deal my taxi fare before I get into it. But how many tourists do you really want with this existing infrastructure? And with how many tourists can the enviroment cope? Great to make the beaches natural when the waste of all this record number tourist is getting pumped into the sea. No matter if from Europe or China. Give a man a fish...or teach him how...
Discussions about Jet Skies, Tuk Tuks and other scams are going on for years. Despite the tragedy of all the accidents and their victims I do have to smile when people demand after every single accident that this has to stop now. It will not. Wake up. I think it will regulate itself when the Chinese market breaks down and the quality tourists have found more pleasant places to stay. Good luck Phuket.
