PHUKET: Children's Day will be celebrated across Phuket at public parks, administrative offices and military bases with the opening of a new mosque leading the way last night.
Hundreds of Muslims from across the southern provinces of Thailand joined locals in marking the first prayers at the Masjid Al Madinah mosque in Sri Suthat Road, which connects Phuket to neighboring Sirey island.
The new 70 million baht mosque sits opposite the Austria-Phuket Community Centre, not far from the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation Hospital.
Last night a celebration fair was held nearby with the emphasis on Children's Day.
Between one quarter and one third of Phuket's population is Muslim. Children once went to complete their education in Thailand's deep south but facilities have been constructed on the island because of the dangers posed by the insurgency.
Phuket has about 50 mosques. Muslims and Buddhists live side by side in villages and towns all along Thailand's Andaman coast.
Completion of the newly-opened mosque will add traditional ceramic patterns and make the building a local landmark.

Thailands muslim community is amazing, having lived on Koh Yoa Noi 28 years ago I still find it a really brilliant part of Thai society. On way back from Lanta for a xmas trip me and girlfriend stopped at a hot spring (Ban Nam Ron) for a supposed 20 minute break we ended up spending whole afternoon there with great company speaking mixture of Thai, English and Melayu (malay which means language in Malay and Indo southern Thais call it Melayu)
