PHUKET: A wanted man accused of slashing the throat of a chief prosecutor was arrested today by a team from north of Phuket.
The officer from Takuapa district and a volunteer collared the man in Lopburi province and delivered him to Region 8 police who were taking him back from Don Muang airport to Surat Thani province.
On Sunday night the Chief Prosecutor of Surat had his throat slashed in a brutal murder.
He had previously been Chief Prosecutor in Phang Nga's Takuapa district, north of Phuket, before being transferred in May.
The arrest today was orchestrated by Takuapa district chief Manit Pleantong - Phuketwan's Person of the Year 2014 for his anti-human trafficking work - who received a call from the relatives of Niwat Jangsuk, 36, who said he wanted to surrender.
A district officer and a volunteer were sent to Bangkok, where Khun Niwat was due to surrender. But he changed his mind. Tracing him via GPS, the investigators found him and arrested him in Lopburi province early today.
It is believed the slain chief prosecutor had wide business interests with palm oil plantations across three provinces.
Region 8 police said it was too early to speculate what might have been the motive for the murder. A presentation to the media in Surat was due to take place later today.
Khun Niwat is from Phang Nga and it is believed he knew his victim when they both lived in that province.
