PHUKET: A Burmese worker out hunting squirrel near the hilltop Buddhist temple at Koh Sireh yesterday found the body of a man hanging from a tree. The man was identified by monks as Mr Wit, a Cambodian with health issues who had been staying at the temple and living on handouts since October. He was aged in his late 20s and suffered from chronic illness.
Mr Wit's hands were bound but police believe a suicide is most likely.

Are we puzzled?
Hanging from a tree with bound hands, but police very quickly believe a suicide is most likely?

No, Kurt, we are not puzzled. The man most likely bound his own wrists to prevent him saving himself. People committing suicide do that more often than you would imagine. It would be more difficult to imagine why anyone who killed a Cambodian drifter would go to such an elaborate ruse as a pretence at suicide. And if you had killed the man, surely commonsense would lead to you cut off the wrist bindings before leaving the scene? Some news outlets prefer to keep readers in suspense, Kurt. That way, you get traffic for the mystery death, and more traffic when the mystery death is ruled a plain suicide. There is always some doubt, but the bound wrists have a simple explanation. Don't be sucked in. RIP.
