British Woman Tells of Being Quarantined Over Mers in Thailand

Thursday, June 25, 2015
PHUKET: A British woman quarantined in Thailand after sitting behind a passenger on a plane with the Mers virus has talked a length to a tabloid newspaper about the experience.

Kerry Sue Newman flew to southeast Asia earlier this month ''but is now being kept in a solitary hospital room in the seaside district of Hua Hin for two weeks, some 6,000 miles from home,'' the Daily Mail reports.

Miss Newman, 30, was told by Thai authorities she had to be quarantined and was transported by ambulance from the Por Promin Muay camp where she was staying to the hospital.

''Apparently the risk is not that high, as I am a fit, healthy woman in my prime, and the disease tends to attack the elderly, and those with a weak immune system,'' she told the newspaper.

''They found me very quickly and have been looking after my every need.

''They installed a television into my room without me even asking, plus supplying me with lots of fresh fruit and good vegetarian food, plenty of fluids, including juices and lots of milk - basically I am on an involuntary detox.''

Thai authorities appear to have reacted well to the discovery of a Mers case and the patient, who flew to Thailand from the Middle East, is said to only have a mild version of the potentially deadly virus.

As Mr Spock used to say "the needs of the many out weight the needs of the few" - seriously though Thailand is doing exactly the correct thing any government should do. Perhaps next time she will fly non stop as many airlines do including British Airways to BKK.

Surprisingly first class treatment and all due care sometimes the Thais show us how things should be done in this first class example.

Compared to the billions (sure not millions) of USD damage a serious outbreak of MERS could do to the Thai economy the cost of "taking care" of her is negligible but she should get a new Visa when she comes out or the days adjusted either at no cost.
