What Bomb, Say Phuket Police as International Scare is Quickly Defused

Tuesday, October 28, 2014
PHUKET: Authorities have denied there was a ''bomb'' or a ''bomb scare'' on Phuket's east coast today.

A small mysterious object washed up on the shore at Cape Panwa.

The superintendent of Vichit Police Station said that the package appeared to contain a grenade and would be destroyed by experts.

The notion that there might be a ''bomb'' on Phuket has been picked up as far afield as the Aftonbladet newspaper, which told its readers in Swedish in a large headline: Bomb Drama in Phuket.

Exaggeration of the facts is likely to cause alarm when there is none on Phuket.

Grenade is a kind of bomb.

Only in the minds of tabloid headline writers.

Exaggeration is the opposite to what the Thai authorities do which is hide the facts. Scaring the readers a little may help wake up the constant cover-ups by the government.

No, a grenade is a bomb by definition ; same in other languages :

"small bomb thrown by hand or launched mechanically".

Obviously , a bomb is of quite wide definition and always needs clarification what kind of bomb, a grenade or nuclear bomb is meant.

Nobody who has thrown a grenade would call it a bomb. A grenade is small and limited in effect. Bombs rise in scale up to Hiroshima and beyond. The difference between Phuket Bomb Drama and Phuket Grenade Drama is vast. That's why headline writers avoid the word 'bomb' unless it's precise and accurate.

We had a spate of letter box explosions, the media ran with the word bomb, made people take note and spread the word.

I dare say a grenade in the same letter boxs would of had more of an inpact than the small home made devices which were used.

Tecnically a nade could be classed as a bomb, but having a already established name should of been named as a grenade.

Still either way it's still disturbing.
