Already, says Cherng Talay Police Station Superintendent, Colonel Paworn Pornpromma, there are some intriguing issues.
Tests on the remains in Surat Thani have revealed that the initial belief that the body was that of a woman might not prove correct.
''Paramedics reckoned the body had been in the water for about a week but we now think it could be at least a month,'' the colonel said today.
''We are no clearer yet on whether the person was Asian or Caucasian.''
Murder seemed likely because the body appeared to have both wrists tied behind its back. That diagnosis now seems less likely because of the grisly finding by the pathologists that the arms were bound together by a stretch of intestine.
The intestine comes from the same body, according to the medical examiners, who are continuing to try to discover precisely what happened.
Colonel Paworn said today that no persons have been reported missing in the region lately.
He said, however, that it was entirely possible that the body found on Surin on September 29 could be a body that was reported sighted but not recovered off Chalong on September 27.
Another intriguing aspect is the jawbone. It was found loose on Surin beach beside the body.
''The autopsy has yet to reveal how the person died,'' Colonel Paworn said. ''There was no major trauma detected.''
Leave it to PW to publish a photo of body parts....

Leave it to Matt to make a fatuous remark. We've published the faces of the dead before and will do so again if we believe there's a good reason. if you are troubled by a photo of a skeletal jaw, feel free to find your news elsewhere. We won't stop you. Stay indoors at Halloween.
